10k miles expensive with my ID.4

I have driven 10K miles and the ID.4 is great. Taking in consideration that I took my clean brand new car to a car wash without reading the owners manual and with the auto windshield wipers on, the motor got busted costing me $900 bucks and over a month waiting for part.
Today as I see a tire warning lights on the dash it was too late. My Bridgestone Dueler H/P Sport RFT All-Season Radial Tire - 255/50R19 107W was destroyed. Yes, it’s not a run flat like some people suggest! I still in love with the ID.4 Awesome Eletric VW

Whoa... yeah... this is my first car with auto-on windshield wipers. I'm not sure I would have thought about that hazard myself. Thanks for sharing this valuable tip and sorry for your pain.

I had a similar experience in a car wash, but was fortunate that the wipers triggered with the first rinse spray and I was able to flip them off before getting to anything more aggressive. Knowing the price of the repair will hopefully keep this top of mind in the future.

Sounds like a shortcut for carwash needs to be on the main screen.

I recommend to VW engineering to add on the software that if shifter is on N for having the auto windshield wipers disabled. I find out at the VW dealer that their ID.4 First Edition have their motor broken as went through their own car wash too.

Yikes.. Good to know about the auto wipers. I washed my car last week but I was using the wand instead of the autowash so the car was off.

This why i advice if you are washing EV do it with power wash by yourself.....automated washing stations are nothing but trouble awaiting to happen. and it will never clean your car like when you doing it by yourself. And stations that are not touch less will damage and scratch your paint.

Why did the tire fail ?
Sounds like another reason NOT to use mechanical car washes.

Speaking of the wiper motors, has anyone figured out the wiper action that happens each time you start and drive off in ID.4? It is very quick and abrupt and stays hidden behind cowl. My only guess is that it is something like an icebreaker/motor protection action.

I notice them move up a bit on start. Thought it might be because of airo reasons, never really gave it a second thought.
Now i’m curious about the design idea behind it though

My 2019 VW Golf Sportwagen did the same thing.

If I remember correctly, it's a little trick to keep the wipers from always sitting the same way. It "flips" them over so they don't get bent the same way. Just like mowing your lawn in different directions!

Yeah, all of my VWs have done that. It’s normal.
RFT means run flat tyre.

How long did you drive after it lost pressure?
RFT is a go drive to the next gasstation slowly. You can drive slowly on a RFT without shredding it.

Also reading its a Bridgestone.. Are you Not sure it said B-Seal? That is not RFT, but a sticky stuff inside to not let air escape after a puncture. Atleast trying it.

Yes, they should call it "car wash mode". Turn off window wipers, fold in the two side mirrors, automatically roll up all the windows, etc. Should be implemented in the pull down shortcut where the notifications are. You're welcome VW :)

Won't get the window up feature, just like they took away the convenience window up feature in the US (can't speak for other countries). Their lawyers made them take it away as it might pinch kids or dogs. Guess kids and dogs are smarter in the rest of the world or they trust their drivers that know what they are doing when they push the button on the remote or the door handle.

But a car wash mode would be a good idea, might want to add close the sunroof as well, in case you have that open.

The sunroof does not open on any ID.4. This is a good thing to avoid leaks and problems reported on other brands.
