Correct the 12v is lead acid and weak and small. Some cars like the Hyundai have a small 120v inverter built in and that is what their special plug is using to get 120v. If VW ever adds bi-directional charging that will be the best way to hook an inverter to get power from HV thru the CCS port (this is not what Hyundai does). See these threads:
The 12v charges from the HV battery whenever the car is on with its 200A (3000 watt) DC converter.
Its better to use an inverter only while the car is on since you are not deep cycling the 12v, but
The 12v battery is recharged as needed from the HV battery by the 3000 watt DC-DC converter, even when the car is off it will wake up to charge it.
