Is it silly to buy a 2021 car in late 2021? I read a new car loses 15%-30% of its value after the first year. Will I get laughed out of the dealership if I ask for 15% off msrp? I already dropped $500 on the 2021 Pro S reservation, and delivery is expected in August/September. I know reservation is fully refundable.

Welcome to the Forum!

Why would it be silly to buy a 2021 late in its cycle-year? Personally I prefer a German marque built in Germany and as we know manufacture in TN is sometime in MY2022, so ...

There will definitely be some good below-MSRP deals late year, as there are for any dealership looking to clear out in anticipation of the next year's models.
The ID.4 is actually only the 2nd car in my long car buying experience for which I've paid MSRP (rationalized by Fed/State tax credits and a state cash rebate and also what-I-asked trade-in). All others have been at least 6% below and a few much lower given similar late-MY. Fifteen percent may be pushing the envelope for this new model vehicle but it doesn't hurt to ask. Note however that FE delivery only commenced the Ides of March in the USA so Sept isn't really late year, but then presently unknown to us when VW will shift to MY2022.
As it gets closer to your procurement date check the various car buying services just as a sanity check. And of course valued fellow member insight here. ;)

If you lease, the state of depreciation you're talking about is either already baked in because of a low residual value, or it's completely a non-issue.

As to the ID4's RV, it's pretty bad at 48%. I don't know if the low RV is because VW is passing the whole 7500 into the lease.

Kona EV 65%
Chevy Bolt EUV 56%
Leaf 51.2 %
ID4 48%

Now if you buy, then yes, you're losing a whole lotta money UNLESS your expected keep time for the car is many years.
