I picked up my Christmas miracle on 12/21, a '23 red Pro S AWD ID.4. It wasn't the blue ID.4 that I had ordered 8 months ago, but it all worked out fine. I'm very happy with the red color and even happier that I don't have the white interior. The dealer sold it to me for MSRP and I traded in my 2017 CRV for $17K which was about $3K less than I was expecting. I added the YuriK rear plate holder at the dealership and then installed the front plate at home using a kit to install it over the grill. Looks great. If everything goes right I should get $4K back from Illinois and $7.5K returned from taxes. Out of pocket should be around $28K when it's all said and done. Not too bad.

It was apparently the worst possible time to buy an electric car, with holiday travel, sub-zero temperatures, high winds, snow and unknown charging at the destinations. I ended up missing a visit with my partner in life and she is still reminding of that. The car sat in the garage for several days except for short trips to the store.

After that weekend I discovered preconditioning the battery and the weather because more normal (around freezing). I was able to make the 150 mile trip to visit my mom. The car performed perfectly. It was quiet and passing was a breeze. I mostly stuck to 73 MPH on the interstate. I stopped at an EA facility on the way there to top off the battery because I wasn't sure if I'd be able to use my portable L1/L2 charger at her house. Fortunately a spot opened up for me after a Tesla that was occupying a spot but not charging left. Also charging there were a Ionic 5, an F-150, and a Mach-E, and of course one of the four charging station was down. After arriving at my Mom's I did L1 charging overnight and then ended up plugging into her 240 volt dryer outlet and running the cable from inside the house out into the garage. Thank goodness for long cables! She loved the car and said the interface looked easier to navigate then their Subaru Outback's interface. My Mom says she will get a 240 outlet installed in her garage, now that all of her kids will be driving electric cars. I charged to 93% and decided to take the back way home, which involved many turns and rural highways but cuts 30 miles off the trip. The car did great and I got home with plenty of juice to spare.

At home, my JuiceBox refilled the battery while I got ready to head out to my second destination, this one was only 100 miles away but also with a possibility of a multi-day L1 recharge. This trip also went great and I was able to get an old 240 outlet in a shed to work at my destination after some messing about with ancient screw-in fuses.

This week I was back to work with a 50 mile commute each way. This is a perfect commuter car for me!

My 2017 CRV EX-L had 83,000 miles on it and was in almost perfect condition. I loved it except for the anemia accelerating from a stop. And the gas thing... I also went to Honda to see what they'd give me for it and it was more but it washed out when sales tax was considered. If I had a few days warning I would have tried CarMax too but the dealer had no clue when it would arrive, only that it had been shipped (via truck).

Congrats on the new ride! Yours is identical to mine that I picked up on New Years Eve. I haven't had a chance to really give it a run yet ... probably this weekend.

I also did the Yurik bracket on the back. I did the SlyBracket on the front (still need to post pics of that setup).

I had my first real range anxiety last night.

I wanted to charge to 100% yesterday morning because I knew I'd be driving over 130 miles at tollway speeds. Temps around freezing. The charging didn't start properly after I changed it from 80 to 100% max charge. I noticed after an hour or so and started it but it only got to 83% before we left (claimed 189 miles range). Car was all pre-heated. We travelled 60 miles of tollways at 73MPH, sometimes more. Had a weird issue where adaptive driving would tell me to take over steering every 10 seconds or so and then I had to really shake the wheel for it to "see" that I was driving so I just turned it off. The ambient lighting color I had set to blue and which has been working fine for a week went back to default. Otherwise the car performed wonderfully.

The car sat for many hours at our destination then we headed back toward home and had to stop at the store, etc. The adaptive driving now worked fine. Drove at 73ish MPH on the tollway because it looked like I would get home with at least 30 miles still available. Got one message that said Charge Now (at 15%?) and the battery bar turned yellow. 15 miles to home and the gauge said said 30 miles remaining! At 10% battery I got another message and the battery bar turned red. It looks like the actual range for this trip would have been about 150 miles, I will need to take that into consideration. Made it home fine. I had to start the charging twice to get it to remain charging.

I can't even find the settings to control the ambient lighting now. They should be under vehicle-interior, right? Does that not work while the car is plugged in?

I unplugged the car and read the manual. Yes, that's where Ambient lighting is supposed to be.

Is there a button missing here?

Also look at the volume / heat slider bar under the display. There are lights! they are only visible to the camera though. Does that mean they are infrared? Can we use that somehow to create visible light?

Your car and our car are twins - we're only at 571 miles, though.

You must be in a colder climate than we are (we're in Seattle area). I noticed you had 147 miles projected range at 69%. Our car as it sits now has 127 miles predicted at 45%.

Little short trips absolutely cream the miles/kwh, though. I can speak to that from experience. We do much better on longer ones.

I'm very happy with it so far, I hope you are happy with yours too.

Hopefully when it's warms up in 6 months or so I'll get longer range too. I'll be putting 1000 miles a month on it driving back and forth to work, but that's why I bought it!

I'm meeting Joe Franz of the EV Motoring YouTube channel to buy his WeatherTech floor mats. He's been through several EVs since his ID.4 so he can keep creating content.

Triplets, although I'm a bit south of you both in Vancouver. We got ours on 12/30, out shopping for a big SUV and decided to take one for a test drive. Took a couple of days to decide what we wanted to do. No clue how many miles yet, but less than 500.

Congrats NWRogue - they seem to be cranking this model out! Hopefully yours is as trouble free as mine is.

Met up with Joe yesterday and got the mats. He's driving a Tesla model 3 now, and just traded in a Volvo EV that he apparently only owned for 6 months or so. He said the ID.4 was the most comfortable and practical out of the three, and that the Tesla had (surprise) the best charging network.

I installed the YuriK backup camera shield last night and backed out of my congested parking in the dark this morning. Camera is in fisheye mode, the licence plate is still slightly visible and it's not really much better than it was. Is the non-fisheye camera mode more useable? I haven't tried it yet.

I see that the VW dealership is selling the CRV that I traded in for $22,600. I traded it in for $17,000. That's a tidy profit for them.

Is there any way to get more charging stats out of the in-car infotainment app? I'm not seeing charging speed when I'm L1/L2 charging. Also it would've nice to see the instant miles/Kwh that I'm using and regenerating while driving. Do I need ABRP and a dongle for that?

Thanks, I'll add those to the wish list.

I finally had some time to play due to MLK day.
  • Cleaned and installed the new/used WeatherTech mats.
  • Installed the frunk kit.
  • Fixed the issue where the "Pro S" emblem on the driver's side would cause a squeak as it rubbed on the front fender every time I opened the door (filed it a little).
  • Finished the hitch mounted chrome pipes. They are completely over the top. 😆

Normally I'm not in the market for red cars (I've had 1 for 17 years and am ready for something new), but that one looks awesome!

I received my power bill for the first month of EV ownership. Power here in Northern Illinois is about .11 per kilowatt/hour. The bill was about $100 more than usual. This equates to about 32 kw per day which is about right. I use about 30kw each day I commute (half of the work days) plus holiday traveling, plus we live out in the boonies where it's 20 miles to anywhere. I used to spend about $50 a week on gas with my CRV that averaged 30 mpg, so this is still half the price I paid to fuel my CRV.

This morning's commute at -5F. I saw as low as -11 on the ride in. The car was in the heated garage (42F) overnight and I preheated the cabin before the trip. I used 30% of the battery during the almost 50 mile commute and averaged 2.0 miles/Kwh. On a "normal" winter day I use 20% each way. Heat was set to 70 with steering wheel and seat heaters on low. The ride was comfortable and quiet and drama free. That's just the way it is.
