I picked up my Christmas miracle on 12/21, a '23 red Pro S AWD ID.4. It wasn't the blue ID.4 that I had ordered 8 months ago, but it all worked out fine. I'm very happy with the red color and even happier that I don't have the white interior. The dealer sold it to me for MSRP and I traded in my 2017 CRV for $17K which was about $3K less than I was expecting. I added the YuriK rear plate holder at the dealership and then installed the front plate at home using a kit to install it over the grill. Looks great. If everything goes right I should get $4K back from Illinois and $7.5K returned from taxes. Out of pocket should be around $28K when it's all said and done. Not too bad.

It was apparently the worst possible time to buy an electric car, with holiday travel, sub-zero temperatures, high winds, snow and unknown charging at the destinations. I ended up missing a visit with my partner in life and she is still reminding of that. The car sat in the garage for several days except for short trips to the store.

After that weekend I discovered preconditioning the battery and the weather because more normal (around freezing). I was able to make the 150 mile trip to visit my mom. The car performed perfectly. It was quiet and passing was a breeze. I mostly stuck to 73 MPH on the interstate. I stopped at an EA facility on the way there to top off the battery because I wasn't sure if I'd be able to use my portable L1/L2 charger at her house. Fortunately a spot opened up for me after a Tesla that was occupying a spot but not charging left. Also charging there were a Ionic 5, an F-150, and a Mach-E, and of course one of the four charging station was down. After arriving at my Mom's I did L1 charging overnight and then ended up plugging into her 240 volt dryer outlet and running the cable from inside the house out into the garage. Thank goodness for long cables! She loved the car and said the interface looked easier to navigate then their Subaru Outback's interface. My Mom says she will get a 240 outlet installed in her garage, now that all of her kids will be driving electric cars. I charged to 93% and decided to take the back way home, which involved many turns and rural highways but cuts 30 miles off the trip. The car did great and I got home with plenty of juice to spare.

At home, my JuiceBox refilled the battery while I got ready to head out to my second destination, this one was only 100 miles away but also with a possibility of a multi-day L1 recharge. This trip also went great and I was able to get an old 240 outlet in a shed to work at my destination after some messing about with ancient screw-in fuses.

This week I was back to work with a 50 mile commute each way. This is a perfect commuter car for me!

My Max Green travel EVSE fits perfectly in the ID.4 Frunk kit from @mochalatte. It has stayed clean and dry so far. I cut the bin myself using his instructions and templates and it all fit perfectly.

A updated EV JuiceNet app was pushed down a couple days ago. I had to re-add the EVSE to the app and it changed the "added range" screen to 255 which meant that the scheduled charging never happened during the night and I had to charge in the morning instead of driving to work. I'll be sure to check that if it updates again. Dang technology!

The most frustrating thing I'm experiencing now are the buttons on the left side of the steering wheel to adjust the cruise speed. I like to drive 63MPH of the rural highways around me. Pushing the up/down speed adjustment adjusts the speed in 5mph increments. Tapping the buttons adjusts in 1MPH increments. Usually I drive up to the speed I want to go then push the button to activate the cruise control which sets it to the current speed. When I miss the speed by a MPH or two and have to adjust it, getting that tap short enough is nearly impossible and very frustrating. Is there a setting to control that I may have missed?

It's been 2 months since I picked up my ID.4 the first month I put on 2200 miles, this month it was thankfully only 1400 miles. Still no issues other than some drama because I keep forgetting to put the car in park to make it unlock the passenger door for my fiance' to get in. It has a bit of a lag to unlock and she is tired of trying to open a locked door. I think the only indication of locked doors is the little lock symbol on the front seat arm rests.

Also I bought a ODBLink CX. Still figuring out how to use it with ABRP, etc.

Figured out to use the ODBLink CX with Carscanner. It works pretty well, wow are there a lot of different items of data to choose from! You do have to be sitting in the car and connected to the ODB adapter to get it all set up and it takes a while to wander through all the settings.

With my BT classic dongle I can connect and do everything from in my easy chair in my house, 25' away from my car. Its a much better way when its <0F here lately. You could try with yours to see what its range is.

It's the doldrums of winter. The car now has an average of 2.6kwh/mi since I bought it at the end of December. Except for the usual minor software issues it's had no issues carting me the 100 miles to work and back for errands and on short trips. I accidentally charged it to 100% a couple nights ago and didn't notice until later during the day. Horrors! I had to go blast around town a bit to get it to 90% as I really didn't need to go anywhere until the next day. Whee!

I have about 20 XM and FM stations defined in my radio favorites and the interface seems to have slowed down lately. Seems like the app is out of memory and swapping. It has been taking a while to catch up when switching between stations to find a good song. I'm going to try a reboot and also see if I can remove the default map app from the main screen to save memory.

Did the reset, it did seem to help.

I'm getting hourly pricing from my power provider Comed (commonwealth Edison). Since I charge at night it should save me a lot of money. The price per kw changes every hour. It looks like the peak is around noon. Their calculator says it will save me over $1000 a year. Wow!

It's been almost 3 months and just over 5000 miles. No issues so far. It's still cold so the efficiency is still around 2.7mi/Kwh.

There's a theatre next to our Walmart with free Volta chargers. Today I dropped off the little lady, drove to the theatre, started the charge and walked back. Not too bad. She was only annoyed in a minor way when I had to go get the car after we checked out. It put about 15% back in the battery.

I was washing the car today at the hand wash (sprayer) place and the hatch decided to open while I was spraying it. Sensitive!

I was reviewing the hourly Comed power rates and it looks like it gets up to .60/Kwh on the peak days. There were a couple of those close to Christmas this year and a few over the summer but overall the rate is lower. They are supposed to notify me when the rates are forecasted to be unusually high and then I can hassle my family to not use too much power.

Today is the one year anniversary of my reserving an ID.4. At the time the salesperson said it would take 8 months for it to arrive. Things didn't exactly work out as I expected but I'm happy with the car I have.

I got the email from Comed saying that I'm now on hourly pricing, which is good because I also got a power bill that was $60 more than last month, mostly due to the "carbon free energy resource adjustment" credit which was $36 last month and only $0.56 this month. Weird. Effectively power has gone up from 14.5 cents per KW to 17 cents.

Today was the first really nice day for my work commute.
  • 47 miles each way.
  • Temps today in the mid 70s F.
  • Mostly rural roads with stop signs or turns every 5 miles or so.
  • Illinois river valley so not flat but no big grades.
  • Cruise set to 63MPH.
I averaged 3.2mi/kw both ways, the best efficiency so far this year.

I noticed that there are a lot of 2" or so round holes in the belly pan. Looks like they are access holes for fasteners. Also there are a set of square holes and some U-clip fasteners with nothing to fasten in the aero panel behind the axle/motor. I'm going to cover them with some gorilla tape.

Today is the 4 month anniversary for my ID.4. I have put on 6500 miles so far. Miles/KW is up to 3.2 on my work commute with the warmer weather.

I still smile when the lights come on as I walk up to the car.

I received my first power bill from Comed (northern Illinois) after switching to hourly billing. Last month the bill was $300 and this month it was $150. If I can avoid the few times a year hourly billing is stupid expensive, this may work out well!

I still haven't figured out the rhyme or reason behind the passenger door locking. Seems like it locks above a certain speed or maybe a certain time after starting. Locking algorithm may be different in forward than reverse. I thought maybe putting it in park unlocked it but maybe not. The lock icon doesn't always turn yellow when it's locked. My lady still gets locked out about 25% of the time. She got stuck in the rain for longer than needed when I picked her up today at a store's door and it locked after driving at low speed from my parking spot to the door. Between that and the passenger seat back reclining randomly she still doesn't like the car. I'll have to keep better track of when it does this and see if it's the same time that the mood lighting gets randomly reset to white. I'm hoping these issues get fixed in 3.2.

The first commute after I added the patches to the holes in the battery it was raining and my Kwh/mi was bad. The next day it seemed better than usual but there are so many variables like temperature and wind speed/direction it's going to be hard to quantify anything.

The car automatically locks all the doors when you reach about 9 mph. Not sure about reverse speed.

The lock indicator on drivers door only lights when all the doors are locked. If only 3 doors are locked, the indicator will not be lit.

Towed the trailer with my streamliner on it to Iowa. 90 miles on rural highways at about 69 degrees and the cruise locked at 63 mph. Averaged 3.0 mi/kwh which is better than I imagined. Only about .5 mi/kwh off of "normal" for this trip!

The trip back home was completely different. Towed the empty trailer home into a stiff headwind and rain at 53 degrees. Averaged 2.0 mi/kw and used 58% of the battery which was bad because I failed to plan properly and started out at 73%. Made it home fine though. I love my heated steering wheel!
