I picked up my Christmas miracle on 12/21, a '23 red Pro S AWD ID.4. It wasn't the blue ID.4 that I had ordered 8 months ago, but it all worked out fine. I'm very happy with the red color and even happier that I don't have the white interior. The dealer sold it to me for MSRP and I traded in my 2017 CRV for $17K which was about $3K less than I was expecting. I added the YuriK rear plate holder at the dealership and then installed the front plate at home using a kit to install it over the grill. Looks great. If everything goes right I should get $4K back from Illinois and $7.5K returned from taxes. Out of pocket should be around $28K when it's all said and done. Not too bad.

It was apparently the worst possible time to buy an electric car, with holiday travel, sub-zero temperatures, high winds, snow and unknown charging at the destinations. I ended up missing a visit with my partner in life and she is still reminding of that. The car sat in the garage for several days except for short trips to the store.

After that weekend I discovered preconditioning the battery and the weather because more normal (around freezing). I was able to make the 150 mile trip to visit my mom. The car performed perfectly. It was quiet and passing was a breeze. I mostly stuck to 73 MPH on the interstate. I stopped at an EA facility on the way there to top off the battery because I wasn't sure if I'd be able to use my portable L1/L2 charger at her house. Fortunately a spot opened up for me after a Tesla that was occupying a spot but not charging left. Also charging there were a Ionic 5, an F-150, and a Mach-E, and of course one of the four charging station was down. After arriving at my Mom's I did L1 charging overnight and then ended up plugging into her 240 volt dryer outlet and running the cable from inside the house out into the garage. Thank goodness for long cables! She loved the car and said the interface looked easier to navigate then their Subaru Outback's interface. My Mom says she will get a 240 outlet installed in her garage, now that all of her kids will be driving electric cars. I charged to 93% and decided to take the back way home, which involved many turns and rural highways but cuts 30 miles off the trip. The car did great and I got home with plenty of juice to spare.

At home, my JuiceBox refilled the battery while I got ready to head out to my second destination, this one was only 100 miles away but also with a possibility of a multi-day L1 recharge. This trip also went great and I was able to get an old 240 outlet in a shed to work at my destination after some messing about with ancient screw-in fuses.

This week I was back to work with a 50 mile commute each way. This is a perfect commuter car for me!

I had something different happen yesterday. As I was pulling into my work parking spot which has a large rectangular concrete pillar on one side, the car suddenly stopped like I hit the pillar. I backed up a little and parked it. No marks on the bumper or pillar. The car sensors do usually scream that I'm too close to the pillar as I'm pulling in but I have never had it stop the car to avoid a parking obstacle like that going forward before!

Monday is update day.

Thanks Spin, sounds like I'll need it.

"I just wanted to touch base with you on the id4. We are having an issue with the software update recall. It made it halfway through the update, and stopped. We reached out to technical assistance, and they advised us to have the modules go to sleep tonight, and attempt to run the programming again tomorrow."

In the meantime I'm driving the loaner Taos buzzbomb.

Here's the 919A update writeup from my tech today. The update process is much more than just pressing start. Maybe having somebody who is interested and motivated and trained and has The Knack is what it takes to get smooth updates? Or just luck maybe.

Post update notes:
  • Had to re-add my ambient color
  • Had to re-add all the charging setting (change it from 100% to 80%, re-set plug and charge, set up the "home" charging settings)
  • Reconfigured the home page to move the navigation to the second screen (long press on app to get into edit mode).
  • Had to change the pod screens to my usual
  • Had to change the MyVW app to change the charge level back to 80% and change the new setting to charge at preferred times.
  • MyVW app now has the ability to toggle charging from preferred times to immediate.
  • MyVW app now has the extra menu to manage charging locations and charging preferences.
  • The screens do have better response
  • The "Using the speed up / down buttons on the steering wheel excessively causes the cruise control to stop working" bug is fixed
  • The "After changing radio stations rapidly using the steering wheel buttons, the radio stops playing. No FM or XM audio. To fix it, need to go to the radio dialog and select FM or XM from the drop-down" bug has been fixed.
  • Also fixed was the issue where, if you got out of the car for a short time shortly after starting a journey, and then used the cruise control with lane keeping feature, the steering wheel sensor didn't think you were holding the wheel and displayed red flashing lights, etc. Shaking the wheel hard would clear it for a short time.
  • Also fixed was - When I would swipe to open or close the roof shade, the drivers map light would turn on.
  • The lane following is improved. A section of road that has tar strips paralleling the road used to cause the car to swerve, but no more!

I'll add more later...

Did you just have to re-toggle the plug-and-charge option on the infotainment, or did you have to go through the whole process with EA of registering the car and sending the certificate and all that?

That's great to hear!

Seeing that they were able to enhance the performance of the "old" infotainment makes it more aggravating though that they cut line and moved to a whole other hardware/software stack. I bet they could have made more optimizations and improved the usability even more if they hadn't abandoned it. They have no incentive to do so now.

Still, I'm glad we're getting something. The bug fixes sound nice (if not long overdue).

I just had to re-add the charging options (to both car and to the new menu items on the phone). No re-registration needed.

Took the ID.4 to the dealership this morning. They were able to reproduce the issue but it wasn't throwing any errors so they said they needed to call the mother ship for instructions. Probably they need permission to install a new handle so VW will pay for it. They sent me on my way in my car until they have a course of action.

-10F on the way into work today. The car used 50% more energy than at 70F+. It wasn't a surprise and I planned accordingly.

Dealership says VW told them they should install a new door handle. They have ordered it and it should be in today. That's good because I'm getting really tired of my driver's door being locked. This morning was another day where I had to open the passenger door then reach across to open the drivers door.

I took the ID.4 back to the dealer this morning and they installed a new drivers door handle. It was a little better but still not working right. This time I showed the ID.4 tech what was wrong with it (Doesn't unlock on approach, doesn't open when you touch the inside of the handle, etc...). They decided to keep the car and work with VW to resolve the issue and put me in a Tiguan to drive in the meantime. We forget how nice the ID.4s are until we have to drive something else.

After 2 years and 2 months of ID.4 ownership, I miss my car.

Oh, there it is! It's still hanging out in the VW dealership back parking lot, waiting for VW corporate to determine a fix for the second door handle they installed to resolve the door handle recalls.

I actually like the Tiguan R loaner, not fancy or fast but it has most of what I use in the ID.4, handles well.

Today the dealership said they replaced and recalibrated the handle again and it appears to be fixed. They want to let it sit over the weekend and re-test it Monday. In the meantime, the Tiguan corners better than the ID.4 so I have been enjoying that. Fingers crossed!

3rd replacement handle apparently works properly. Picking my car up this afternoon. Hopefully all fixed now.

Picked up the car and the door handle seems to work normally now. Yay! The dealership worked hard to resolve the issue with the recall replacement handles and my car was all clean when I picked it up so I'm happy.

I have now had the car for two years and two months, and driven it 40,000 miles. I haven't had any issues other than that now resolved problem with the replacement handles.

The small driving lights I installed in June or 2024 did not make it through the winter. Yesterday I noticed that one wasn't working and upon inspection I see that the lenses fell off both lights at some point allowing water to get into them, probably due to car washes, crappy weather and freeze thaw cycling. Fortunately I had to get the lights in a 10 pack so I have extras. I added some extra sealant around the lens of a new light and it was easy to replace. I'll do the other one later.

I have noticed the glass roof creaking since the recalls were done. I ordered the RV rubber seal conditioner to resolve that.

In addition to the couple bug fixes I noticed in 3.5, it seems like the lane holding feature is now much better in ignoring tar strips and other road coloration anomalies. There was a section of road with wavy tar strips parallel with the road that used to cause it to swerve around and it doesn't do that now. Cool!

ID.4 OS 3.5 also fixed the issue where, if you got out of the car for a short time shortly after starting a journey, and then used the cruise control with lane keeping feature, the steering wheel sensor didn't think you were holding the wheel and displayed red flashing lights, etc. Shaking the wheel hard would clear it for a short time. I tested this a few times and wasn't able to get it to reoccur.

I think the only software oddity left that I considered a bug is the random seat recline issue, and that will require more passenger seat time to test.

My Enel-X/VoltiE Juicebox failed to show all of the history for charging sessions in Feb-March and I really do like to keep track of how many KW I'm using for the ID.4 so I ordered an OpenEVSE module for it. Looks like there is some open source site for the logging which is annoying but hopefully more stable than VoltiE.

It's currently at 41,600 on the odometer. All good except for the drivers door handle that often needs a few tugs to open.

I was on a parking lot the other day and didn't get any notifications from the car when cars, people and random elephants were going back and forth behind me so now I'm sitting in my garage looking for the rear traffic alert / blind spot monitoring feature under assist systems to see if I can turn it on. Nothing happens when I push the park button on the dash. Did this setting go away in 3.5? Does anybody else with 3.5 have this issue?

Still waiting for the OpenEVSE module...

I just went out to the car. It’s not under Assist Systems. It’s in the parking menu. There are a couple of different ways to bring it up, but one is to put the car in reverse and then:

Does that work?
