I just heard that the reason the 2023 ID.4s are being held at the Chattanooga factory is that they will be getting a later software version than 3.1.1, which is not ready yet. This is from what I consider a reliable source overseas.

I guess in a way it's good we with v2.1 are still waiting (a real stretch for a glass half full at this point) so we can ultimately get v3.1.1 rather than MY2022 v3.1? Of course a backwards compatible MY2021 might be v3.1.2? 🤷‍♂️
It is hard to believe that after 16 months with this vehicle and we are still on 2.1

They will get something after 3.1.1. (3.1.2? 3.2? The source did not know the exact version) When I asked if we will ultimately get the same version as the 2023s, the source said she assumes so.

The intel I've heard says 3.2 is as far as the current software will go, then on to 4.0. That was recently corroborated on a German forum in a post a member shared here a few weeks ago.

But just throwing out 3.x and 4.x without knowing what has changed underneath feels sort of empty. For instance, the jump to 3.0/3.1 never felt like it was a clean break from since 2.4 was a required component of the upgrade path. I'd expect a new version number to be a clean, self-contained, stand-alone installation.

All very mysterious to me.

Well, apparently software issues caused the CEO to lose his job. It definitely held up deliveries in the first half of this year.

I thought the only reason 2.4 (aka 0912) was "required" was in order to have that version, you got the upgraded 12V battery and systems updated to support OTA to get 3.x. In that vein, why would they hold for a software upgrade if any 3.x version is OTA capable unless they suspect it is imminent and/or they are gunshy. Then again, we've seen their history of holding systems for upgrades (id.3s, 22 id.4s in US) so it fits the mold. Annoying that even Ford regularly updates Mach-E with OTA and even VW Europe does OTA but the US...

Yeah but for software issues at the 30,000' level, upcoming platforms, systems stuff, deployment between brands, decisions on autonomy, etc. by all accounts.

This MEB version number stuff is unfortunately piddly details with deployment probably being affected by whatever chaos exists inside of Cariad. You're probably right that the 2022 delayed rollout didn't make anybody in the boardroom happy, but at best that would have been just a single nail in Diess' coffin. I don't believe this shakeup is going to change anything dramatically for us '21 owners -- that machine is already in motion and we'll get it when we get it.

I believe that the exactly the rationale needed to explain the "delay" -- if it's software, it's because the software isn't ready (and with new features such as auto lane-change and self parking, they'll need final software to support those, so wouldn't release with incomplete/incompatible software such as 3.1 that leaves out those features). But more realistically, the hold is to clear the '22s out of the delivery pipeline, so '23s can come be introduced into the system at an appropriate time and not overlap.

My source says the software is definitely the reason for the hold

After reading my post, my German source contacted me to say that I misunderstood. The software for the 2023s is completed, just has not been approved. The cars will remain in Chattanooga until the software is approved.
