$6.19 Seatbelt Trick to keep climate system on while parked.

Until there is the equivalent of dog or camp mode this will have to do. I got tired of doing seatbelt gymnastics to keep the a/c on while parked. Legal Disclosure: I am not advocating this technique so use it at your own risk!

Re: Dog mode
When the A/C is running, are you able to lock the doors? Or can anyone get into the car and drive away?
What's this for exactly? Passenger AC?
A/C in general while parked with Driver’s seat unoccupied. Seatbelt + Seat have sensors integrated in them. See video above.

No you can’t lock doors with keyfob outside vehicle (inside passenger can lock vehicle) and if key is not detected in vehicle it can’t be moved. See Tesla Bjorn’s videos for more explanation.

You can just reach inside car and push start button on the steering column and the air will keep running. You must be out of the seat before pushing button. I was able to leave my dog this way and it did not shut off. No hacks. Designed to work this way.

How long? I'd be concerned about a timeout mode for anything over 10 minutes. Any idea of whether this would or would not be affected by the 90 pound Lab sitting in the driver's seat looking cute for everybody in the parking lot? Then, leaving the seat possibly triggering a timeout? The lack of a door opening may also affect how the car behaves with a dog inside.

I just wish VW would include a Dog Mode OTA, or issue some factory guidance on how to accomplish dog mode--knowing the exact parameters--with current settings (in vehicle's country) so you could be confident enough to leave for a half an hour, or so.

The push the start button method times out, and my sense is it runs at reduced output.

The seatbelt hack leaves the car in a drive ready state, full output, no timeout, and radio if it's wanted. But there's enough protection that the car can't be driven without a key present.

Its good to know that VW has some purpose for that button other than visual, but as stated below by another member, it is limited in its effectiveness. Its like humans having a tailbone, its a vestigial structure still present in legacy autos. Its frustrating how legacy auto is 1/2 committed to making a vehicle comparable to Tesla. They think we want buttons and to slowly transition into software driven vehicles like Tesla. I sold a Tesla M3 weeks ago due to the crazy used car market and purchased an ID 4 because of the 3 years of EA charging and $7500 tax credit. If either of those weren’t on the table, I wouldn't have purchased ID 4. Truthfully, I have been pleasantly surprised by some pros of the VW: ID Light + Hello ID, Dynamic Headlights/Amber Turn LED Lights, Massaging Seats, Powered Headliner, Ambient lights, Wireless Apple CarPlay, Great Rain sensing wipers, lighted door handles + puddle lights, overall price value, and insane turning circle. Can VW and legacy auto improve software as quick as Tesla is improving manufacturing. So far that is not been the case, Tesla will soon be producing Model Y's + 3's with front and rear castings and stuctural battery pack. Sandy Munro called this the holy grail-the perfect build. I plan on taking full advantage of the EA free 3 year fast charging to drive my ID 4 all over the US. I will miss the beautiful software that Tesla vehicles have: walkaway lock, 1 pedal driving, GPS Homelink, phone as a key, auto hold, route planning that incorporates your actual fast chargers (EA) with real-time stats, plug and go fast charging, dog and camp mode, etc. All these can be incorporated by VW with updated software. Can VW the company change its DNA to compete with this new class of transportation developed by the market EV leader Tesla, or is it too late already? Read Clayton Christensen's excellent book "Disruptive Innovation" for more answers. Sorry for getting off topic, but the worthless start button triggered me...LOL

I did this sitting in passenger seat and it turned off after 20min. Sorry dog🙂

Can't you lock the front door(s) with the mechanical key in the FOB?

User @Erhard reports being able to lock the door after exiting with the seatbelt engaged. He is also the one who confirmed that the car won't go into gear without a key being present.

edit: oops sorry Erhard I didn't realize you're already in this thread!

Not sure, haven’t tried, but sounds possible, just not very convenient :)

Huh, never used a key in a lock ?!
I did that all the time when fast charging my RAV4 EV - had to leave the car on to charge it vis CHAdeMO

No mechanical locks, convenience is king, I have been using electronic locks, smart locks, and smartphones for years. I did help a friend recently using the dummy key in a 2020 Porsche key fob. It was not an easy process. The Porsche technician said it should be done only for emergencies, easy to damage handle. Modern cars are mostly electronic and the mechanical unlocking mechanisms are not as robust as in the past. As a side note: I keep setting off the panic car alarm with this ID 4, it’s annoying, is a case the only answer?

IMHO, yes. Anything to keep from hearing that nasty ID.4 horn. I have this one, similar to the one from Post #19 in thread linked below. There are several others on Amazon:

My sentiments exactly, I am glad I am not the only one experiencing this problem. My girlfriend was blaming me every time it happened, I will have to show her this thread. Super embarrassing trying to find the key when horn is blaring and telling everyone your fancy electric SUV is having problems.
