It's been clear from reading articles and watching videos that the software on ID.3 is still a work in progress. Has anyone heard of specific software features that won't be ready on the ID.4 1st Edition cars when delivery starts in December? Since the ID,3 still does not have Android Auto or CarPlay available on shipping cars (and hasn't even been demo'd as far as I have seen) I'm wondering if VW has already made any statements that indicate these features will also be delayed on ID.4.

Car play sucks, I hate and am perfectly fine if it isn’t available right away. Means the wife has to leave me alone when I’m driving. 🙌

I’m a veritable Apple fanboy, but I don’t like CarPlay, either. Unless the vehicle doesn’t have built-in nav, in which case I will use CarPlay. Two of my vehicles even have wireless CarPlay and I still don’t use it hah!

That being said, I know a lot of folks like CarPlay and Android Auto, so to each their own. I’m pretty sure the ID.4 is being advertised with CarPlay/AA, so I think it’s safe to assume it’ll have it at launch. If they screw that up in the U.S. they’ll take crap for it for sure.

It seems to be an emerging pattern of features not being available initially, however, having said that, I much rather have a car that may be missing some initial features and then get updated later than having a car that never gets updated. I bought a Mercedes in 2015 and was told by the dealer than CarPlay functionality would be coming but of course never did (have more issue with the dealer than MB on that).

As far as CarPlay - it's a great feature on a rental car but prefer native infotainment for your own car.

I actually like Wireless carplay although it isn’t perfect for sure. It’s one reason amongst others the VW wins out over the Tesla for me. For example, I use waze and gaia, apps that don’t exist in a car nav. WRT Gaia previously I used a clunky setup with an iPad, Bluetooth gps etc which I don’t have to with carplay. I also like being able to go from an address in search on the phone to directions in the car with one touch. I use tidal and Apple Music for all my music. In the Tesla I’d have to use my phone to navigate my music even though there’s that large screen. It’s just one more tool in the car and it’s nice to have in addition to what the car has. I live in the apple ecosystem ( iPad, iPhones, macs etc ) so it makes sense for me. The UI has could use a lot of improvement though.

I haven't had access to use CarPlay (or Android Auto) so it's interesting to read the negative comments. Even if these services are currently crappy I guess I just like the ability to have another feature that can be easily and freely upgraded (by Apple / Google) over time and hopefully get more useful. I keep my cars for many years and any future upgrade options are valued. It's better than being fully locked in to only those features / apps created and maintained by VW itself.

It doesn't sound like anyone has heard of any software features missing at 1st Edition launch. I'm guessing there still will be. I'm going to be reaching out to my EV specialist today and that will be one of the questions I ask about....missing software features in general at launch...not just specifically CarPlay/AA.

It has a purpose especially for waze if the car doesn’t have navigation. However it takes a solid two minutes to hear and reply to a one sentence text message and half the time it sends the wrong words back. It’s even more problematic when my wife sends me a novel. Maybe even worse when someone sends a flurry of small texts all in quick succession.

At the end of the day it’s what’s most important to you in a car. I don’t receive or respond to text in a car as a rule so the richness in mapping/navigation and music is most important to me. Foe those situations CarPlay is better to have than not. Not just waze, but Gaia as I mentioned. A car nav is not a true replacement for either. For example waze warns me by voice when using carplay was if there is an accident ahead or if there is a cop. I was just saved from a ticket yesterday on 405 because waze warned me of a cop ahead and shortly after saw a motorcycle cop pointing a radar at me. If you do off-roading, Gaia is great ( not saying that scenario is primary in the id4 ) but CarPlay was one of the most requested features by Gaia users and it just came out this year. And then there’s music.

For me android auto is a must have. I use google maps, waze, spotify quite a bit. Voice commands are pretty accurate on AA too so I do not need to take my attention off the road in most cases. That been said, the cars I have owned did not have built in navigation so I cannot speak to that experience.

The ID.4 has wireless smart phone integration (Android and Apple) as well as wireless charging. See the “cheat sheet” thread.

The OP's query was on the fact that while it's in the specs, it may not be there at launch since ID.3's still don't have it. I saw somewhere that it will be available next year as an OTA update for the ID.3 and therefore likely on the ID.4 as well.

Is there some way to Android Auto / Car Play and also display the Sirius radio now playing?
