Hi Everyone!

On my trunk I noticed two spots where it looks like the black plastic trim has separated from the painted metal. I don't know if this is normal or if these parts were not installed correctly and I should get this fixed. I do not want my hatch to fill with water when it rains and then mold.

The two spots are above the window (center) by the tail light bar and below the window (center) by the VW logo.

If this is not right, will the dealer fix this under warranty or am I out of luck?

Thank you!

There's a TSB 94-21-01 - LED Center Tail Light Assembly Deflecting Away from --Body which should address this but it should be replaced.

That looks like the often-mentioned separation of the light fixture from the back of the car. Check the forums, you'll find disassembly instructions and pictures. Or you can take it to the dealership.
Uggg. Thanks.

People fix this themselves? Did that mean this defect is not a covered repair? Or are people worried the dangers will scratch the paint?

Thank you

Thanks. I just read that bulletin.

It looks like I may have a unique problem though in that my gap is below the window, like in the bulletin, and above the window too (yay 😳) . Unless I'm reading the bulletin wrong. Hopefully they fix both gaps.

So are people doing this themselves because they thing VW dealers will mess things up/ scratch things? That works me... but the time to do this ...ugg lol.

While washing my ID.4 yesterday I noticed and had to again push in my taillight panel bulge and it was in the shade and 56 degF. So the mechanical clasps must be near completely shot at this point. One of the items I'm saving up for 1st annual maintenance, along with the other recalls/TSB's.

I have the same issue with the 3rd brake light (top light near roof). They replaced it once and now it's actually worse than it was before. Haven't had time to take it back to them again and frankly don't even care anymore.
That is really disappointing. I was thinking of having a ceramic coating put on the car and would rather wait to have the body fixed.

Was it fixed and then got worse again or did they just send you out with a bad repair?

Thank you.

Ha, yeah I seriously do not understand his fascination with plastic clips. They break, they bend/warp in heat, they make repairs difficult, and they all suffer from long-term heat soaking and pliability/plasticity problems in every car I've ever owned. LOL

Despite what he has noted, I personally haven't had any issues with screws/bolts coming undone, and when I did there is a little thing called Loctite. And clearly the folks in Germany at least disagree with him on the usefulness and long-term sustainability of them as well.

Plastic clips are crap in every possible metric except for cost of manufacture. He makes loads of money helping companies manufacture stuff more cheaply. He's been doing it so long that he's gotten muddled up between "good" and "cheap to manufacture".

They sent me out with a bad repair. I didn't take the time at the dealership when I was picking it up post-repair, but I saw it when I got home. The gap is so much worse than it was when I first brought it to the dealer's attention. But I guess at least now the gap is consistent all the way across?

Just had my light assembly replaced by VW two weeks ago. Apparently there should be three pins/arms that hold the assembly in place instead of 2 from the factory.

Came into the dealership today to have them install my VW emblem since it was cracked. Tech told me that there should be another technical bulletin coming out for a better solution. She told me that the three pins/arms still does not hold the assembly into place well enough. I would agree since I can still wiggle the assembly and hear it rattle when going over rough roads. In addition, occasion pop sound which could be due to the expansion of the assembly. Be on the look out for this.

We have the same gap but we just received our car today. How was it through winter? If it was fine I’ll just leave ours until the first service.
