It had quite a buffer, apparently, if after the modification it’ll still have a 9kWh buffer. Still a bit larger than the ID.4.

Model X is not any better.
If you are after SUV of this size efficiency has to suffer....Buffer is the good thing to have.
Like Tesla VW ....Audi and Porsche EV can be run below 0% in extreme conditions......and it will still not let you dive to very low state of charge.
Buffer is also used for initial degradation that happens at very beginning so advertised numbers are more or at what is advertised for specific model.
To some companies reputation is important and not cutting down on battery

Yeah, Audi also claimed they did that because they wanted to be able to maintain a high and sustainable rate of charge almost all the way to full. Not because they didn't believe in the battery and therefore needed more headroom to swap it out. That may be marketing talk. Maybe @VW TECHNICIAN has a better perspective there. LOL

I suspect that will no longer be the case though, as the market has started to accept that charging to 80% is 'fast enough/good enough' and after that is only needed on longer trips. That narrative didn't necessarily exisit in 2018 when the car was introduced. They have enough of them out in the market now as well to be able to actually benchmark their assumptions, which to @VW TECHNICIAN point as well, were apparently pretty conservative.

Didn't Tesla do something similar early on in their history as well with releasing software updates to increase usable battery capacity on already existing cars?

I know Tesla can do it. As I recall, during a major hurricane scare in South Florida a few years back, Tesla did a one time range increase on all the cars down there to aid in evacuation - It was a pretty big range increase, but I think it only lasted for a week or two and then they switched it back to normal

That was where they were making cars with larger battery packs than the owner asked for, and then Tesla could sell them the extra capacity as an upgrade later on. They just turned that extra capacity on for the cars that did not have access to the extra capacity otherwise.
