No real issues opening the tailgate by foot, but closing it seems to be hit or miss. I find it much easier to just hit the button on the door to close. The key to opening seems to be kick your foot just to the left of the trailer hitch and step back. If you stay too close it will not open.

Yes there are many threads here reporting that problem. And most of them solved it once they learned to step back farther than you think is needed: around 6'.

The door has a proximity sensor?
I believe the ultrasonic sensors are used to detect a possible obstacle, including if another vehicle is parked too close.

Like Kpez and SunWizard suggest, stepping back after kicking works wonders.

Yes. VW litigation risk aversion pertaining to the user potentially getting hit by the hatch upon raising, as remote a possibility as it is. If there wasn't so much frivolous litigation by ambulance chasing lawyers (representing take no responsibility for personal actions individuals) there would be less of these "nanny" sensors. imho of course (I have sat on such juries).

Given that it seems much more sensitive to this when closing, they’re probably trying to avoid it closing on someone when they’re hunched over picking something up and not paying attention. Right now it doesn’t trigger accidentally easily, but without the proximity sensor it probably would go off when not intending to

That too, but we were discussing the need to step back when opening while using the foot wave.
As many, I'm more accustomed to using the tailgate button to close however.
