Hi All,

I've been lurking the forums since placing an order for an AWD Pro S in September, but was just able to pick up a cancelled reservation at MSRP with only a $380 dealer fee and no other gimmicks or add-ons from a dealership in Kansas City (about 640 miles from my home in Colorado) yesterday and drove it back via I-70. Here she is:

I thought I'd share some of my thoughts and observations on the process and the trip.

First of all, big thank you to everyone on these forums and anyone who creates content around the ID.4.

I watched just about every English-language ID.4 video that got posted on YouTube up until the day I picked it up, which helped me feel very familiar with the car and emboldened to try road tripping it home.

Shout outs to Branden and Kalie, Joe from JK EV, Kyle Conner, Furkan, and many more! I'm going to try to make a few videos as well to share some features and experiences from my trip that I haven't seen covered much in other videos.

As for the buying process, I cannot stress how highly I recommend Northtowne Volkswagen in Kansas City, Missouri, particularly Matt Weaver. If you can move your reservation there or are thinking of placing one and tripping it back home from KC wouldn't be too big of a deal, you won't go wrong with them.

In September I had started to reach out to every dealership in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Kansas and western Missouri to contact me if a cancelled AWD Pro S reservation came up while my reservation is being built (as of today still 15-2 but haven't gotten the 2022 email, so who knows).

I heard back from Matt in October that a King's Red with gradient was going to be available with them but was still being built. All I had to do was submit a credit check through VW to get my name put on it.

Matt gave me updates all throughout the process (as I didn't have visibility to the reservation not being the one who placed it) and I was able to follow along with this forum and track the Felicity Ace as it transported it to the States. A port delay later it was finally ready to pick up and I flew out to KC.

There was absolutely no pressure to add any extras like wheel locks or ceramic coating or nitrous in the tires or anything like that, nor was there from F&I to take extended warranties or other add-ons.

As I stated before, I got it at MSRP (including destination fee) so it came to just under $52k for that particularly max spec'ed out model pre-tax. I put a downpayment for about half and financed the rest. The interest rate was very comparable to the one I got from my credit union so I just went with the dealer's loan through WF.

This post is getting long so I'll go into more details about the trip in a separate one, but I was able to complete the drive in about 13 hours (about 9 driving and 4 charging).

It would have been a little faster, but not being familiar/confident with my car's range in changing conditions, below freezing temperatures, snow flurries, and a 78mph average speed getting me an average 1.9mi/kw that varied between 1.6 and 2.2 on different legs - the lowest SOC I pulled into a DC fast charger was 21% and twice I filled up to 100% thinking I would need every last watt-hour of range, only to arrive at the next station with 25+% SOC. Would have been a bit faster to go down to ~10% like I had planned in ABRP and charge to 90 instead, but it was a learning experience!

Overall it was a fantastic experience and the car and ride was so comfortable it did not feel like a 13 hour drive. Everything about this car has far exceeded the impossibly high hopes I had for it and while it may not be perfect, it is perfect for me and my family! Now it is happily charging in the garage on the Grizzl-E L2 charger that has been awaiting it since October.

Unrelated post-script: I was on the fence, bordering concerned, about the Florence Brown dash and panels (my reservation had Blue ext. with Lunar Grey interior because of this) - in real life they look awesome. Definitely a true brown (way less burnt orange than some photos online) and have a nice leathery texture that for some reason in pictures looks like a completely smooth vinyl.

Ha. I did the opposite. Gave up on my Red for Blue with grey interior. The brown looks good in the red can't imagine so in the blue. What was the $390 Dealer fee for?

Have you tried to put the drivers side window all the way down? Does your window stick up a half inch?
