More "first world" problems, and I've done a search here and checked the Owner's Manual, to no avail. Is there an option to have the vehicle DEFAULT to "B" mode when turning the shifter for the first time? I realize not a lot of energy or time is being expended having to do it twice, but this seems like something that could be addressed with software? An upcoming update?

On mine, when I switch from Reverse to a forward gear, a decisive twist of the knob does take it straight from 'R' to 'B' and it does it 100% of the time. Switching from N or from Park, it does take two flicks though

That depends entirely on what your previous forward driving mode was. From the time you start your ID.4 until you shut down, any toggle between reverse and forward should go right back to the previously selected mode B or D. What the OP is asking though, is if it can be made default that the car switches first right to B instead of D right after start.

I hope they change it to have the option for B to default (I am not going to get into the one pedal driving/deleting creep discussion). Every time I forget to double-click I almost crash into the car in front of me at the first stop as I expect the car to slow down.

That would definitely go on the accident report as "driver error." ;)

One of my many ‘preflight checklist’ items with this vehicle is to verify i’m in ‘B’ mode, but i too would prefer default to same. I understand why VW opted for ‘D’ however as a more natural transition for new EV drivers.

Any update on making the B mode default? Would pay $50 just to enable this feature.

It would be nice! - As it is, on the rare occasion I somehow end up in D, it usually doesn't take more than a few hundred yards before I realize something is 'wrong' with the car and I switch it back to B

Should be a simple software 'fix' - I know with Tesla, owners have a voice in these things. A friend of mine has actually had a couple of his suggestions implemented into the car.

In Tesla there’s no choice since October 2020. It’s one-pedal drive only.

By the [rare occasion] time that I realize I'm in default 'D' mode and therefore lack that nice around town 'B' regenerative braking approaching a light or vehicle it's downright dangerous! I could be killed!! There should be a class action lawsuit!!!

Ok, not really, but I wanted to see what it would feel like to type same. :ROFLMAO:

Defaulting to 'D' as we know was VW easing the transition of new EV drivers. But as all such learning curve considerations we quickly want things the other way around. 🤷‍♂️

Here is a tip to get some regen on every startup, create a Custom driving mode that uses Sport mode for regen and then it will be active upon every startup. Gets about half of the B mode regen and is not too bad, some here like it better than B regen. And you can still switch to B while in Sport mode for the max. regen.

Is it technically possible to introduce a setting in the infotainment system that would allow one to select the default driving mode or is it limited in hardware somehow?

That sounds like a question for @VW TECHNICIAN. I do not know but my guess would be that it is possible. There are other settings in the infotainment that control hardware like the shade for the glass roof for example.

Yes, I understand that (and that many don't like it too). But a friend owns a 2012 Model S and his software has been updated so many times he's lost count and he says that Tesla does listen to it's customers and that a couple of software suggestions he's made have actually been adopted to the cars. I think owners of anything like to think that manufacturers are listening. If VW was listening to any of us, they surely would have told us something definitive about the promised 90 day software updates we haven't been seeing for the past 18 months or so

Yes with changing coding for specific module to remember last setting. VW departments are not authorized to change this but you can use obdeleven to make vehicles settings the way you want.
