We are making good use of the 3 years of free charging by doing a series of road trips this summer. I always charge at home with my L2 wallbox when I’m there, but I’m wondering if I did have to replace the pack at some point, how much would it cost. Has anyone asked VW about this?

There is an 8 year / 100.000 miles warranty on it (not less than 70% capacity maintained), so it should be pretty unlikely that you’d have to pay for a replacement one.
Out of pocket it would currently be really expensive, but I expect prices to plummet over the next 5 years or so.

On a YouTube channel I watch, a Tesla owner was quoted $16,000 for a replacement battery. On the i3 forum, a member quoted $23,000 for a battery plus AC system rebuild, so I can see the battery being $15 to $18k of that.

So unless you're looking for an exact price, I think that's your ballpark answer.

The cost -- and issue in general -- will become clearer as more ID4s end up in traffic accidents. Insurance companies will pay for repairs up the the current ACV (actual cash value, or essentially its value as a used car being sold by a dealer) before they "total" the car. Being a brand new car, that value is going to be pretty high, and there are certain types of claims that could cause damage to the underneath of the car where the battery is located -- say driving over an object in the road just around a bend in the road. It'll be interesting to see how those are handled.

Actually, that is one worry with a brand new model that has been just recently released -- parts can be really hard to come by on a timely basis. Here is hoping no one needs a big repair job anytime soon.

I agree it is soon to know for sure. The part number for the battery is 0Z1915910N i am only assuming there is some type of core charge in that. I was told it would be around 10k to have it replaced by vw. Given at a Tesla model 3‘s price is 16k I find it hard to believe you would actually be charged the full 27k + labor.

Thanks for the part number. I was pretty sure I had clicked through to a link with the price. When I searched for the part number, there it was a link I had previously visited. "MSRP" $27k...that's why I termed it "suspiciously even" price, it's installed with associated components!

The battery is the heart of the car and the single most expensive part; I believe it if it's $27K for the 82kWh pack. Although that price should come down over time...
Is it a sure thing that the ‘buried’ battery pack can actually be replaced at all? Where has the ability to replace the battery been documented in the VW literature?

Too much, sell before you get 100K if it concerns you. It’s VW’s first ground up EV in 1st production year. Most likely 1/3 of cost of car currently, but that should decrease with battery developments/enhancements. FWIW: I only plan on keeping this car for the term of EA 3 years free fast charging and moving on. This is my 4th EV since 2017 thanks to Fed Tax credits, rebates and the crazy demand for Tesla’s right now. My last car before that was a 2005 Lexus RX I kept for 12 years. I buy all my cars outright/ cash, plus it helps when the fed and state governments pay you to drive the future.

My hope is that the new solid state or advanced battery that will have an extended range will be available in the next 8+ Years. I hope they make them comparable with the cars of today, so if possible you could keep your car, swap out the old with the new and move on For another 8 or more years. Let’s get out of the throw away society and use the bones of the older car with the newest battery technology
