Hi. Own my ID4 1 week now. Problem already. Both screens have gone black and not resetting. Ruined what was otherwise an excellent car for me.
Come on VDub. Whats going on.

While we're waiting for a VW OTA software update, here's the temp workaround: press on the capacitive power button on the left edge next to the volume / temperature sliders, for about 10 seconds. It'll reboot the center screen.

About a week in here and while driving the center screen fully blanked out and music stopped. I held the power button for 10 seconds and everything started back up. Luckily the drivers display did not go out and all of the control systems were maintaining what they were doing before.

This is kind of a critical issue as it can cause distracted driving or worse we loose vital control systems mid drive.

You sure you didn’t take the red pill?

I'm sure this will get fixed with the first update, and while annoying, I wouldn't be too concerned about vital systems being affected. The important code running the car is going to be sandboxed from the display / entertainment. Probably a whole separate unit, with a backup process running beneath it. I've had buggy first-run software on my Ford Flex where I actually installed pretty significant system updates while I'm driving, screens turning off and new boot animations popping up like a Windows update (guess what, Microsoft wrote the Sync software!) and the whole time the car just hummed along.

But I'm not giving VW a pass here! There are enough of us that have experienced this problem that they should have been aware of it. Even just acknowledging it at purchase, "Hey we've got this bug we're working out and your screen may go blank, but it's safe to drive and here's how to reset it..." would have been nice. It is disconcerting if you hop into your brand new car with your first ever 12" touch screen and pfft no nothing, I could see many questioning whether their vehicle is roadworthy.

I also had a blank screen. Pulled over and power cycled the car to reset it. Thankfully I was in a place where I could do that easily.

Definitely hoping for a software update soon.
This has happened to our ID.4 three times now.

The first time, I did three vehicle restarts and none of those fixed it.

This last time, I knew about the power button 10-second trick, and it worked while driving. It's not the Vehicle power button on the steering column, but the A/V capacitive power button to the left of the temperature slider below the 12" screen.

You know I might have. Think it’s a coincidence my screen looked like this?:

My 2019 Tesla Model 3 center console went blank while I was driving. In ID.4 you at least know your speed, since that is not part of the center console. It is a simple matter of rebooting the center console by holding the power button down for 10 seconds. It is annoying but not a deal breaker.

Yes, really critical. I had the same issue. I would encourage all who have the blank screen problem to report it to their VW Dealer to get it recorded under warranty. This also lets VW know the problem is wide spread across the model line.
Until VW has an app that lets me report bugs, it's not really worth it to me to contact the dealer. We already know it's happening to the entire fleet, and its entirely a software-driven problem that can potentially be fixed in forthcoming updates. Teslas have always had this problem in some form or another, I don't think it's going to go away completely at any point. There are so many systems in this car that crashes/reboots will always be necessary. My advice: Just live with it and see if the next update fixes it. I'm not going to take my car to the dealer so a bunch of ICE mechanics can be confused by it for 4 hours. Hopefully the early-June rumor for update 2.2 is true.

I’ve had my ID4 for nearly a month, and had only good things to say— until tonight. I got into the car in my office parking lot, and the center screen remained black. I pressed the power button, and nothing. I got out, locked the car, unlocked it, and ‘started’ it again, and nothing. I drove home, freezing, because the a/c was locked onto the settings from this morning, when it was hot outside. No sound from SiriusXM, although that was set this morning. My iPhone wouldn’t connect to CarPlay. I started thinking that I’d made a mistake in not going with the Tesla Model Y. When I pulled into the garage at home, I googled the problem on my iPhone, and discovered this wonderful forum— and the advice (hold down the infotainment power button for 10 seconds) worked like magic, and brought the screen back to life. Thanks to all of you who posted this incredibly helpful advice!!!!

I have the same issue - 12" display is blank. We bought this nice EV last month runs great, very happy but for this issue. I will try to reset the unit and check if it works.
Hope this gets fixed.
Both Screens Blank and Proximity Alarms - recently I had experience with Proximity Alarm going off constantly - ultimately resolved itself after being plugged up for a couple of hours. The next day, I had both The Scope (steering wheel screen) and the Infotainment Screen going Blank. Would not reset with power button on either steering column or on infotainment screen. Called Dealer, but was 10 day wait to get appointment. I read on this forum that pulling a fuse might do the trick, so researched the online manual and found the two fuses F46 (Infotainment) and F30 (Periscope). When I removed these for about 30 seconds, the system rebooted and came back to life. Today, was my appointment with service at my dealer. The technician was able to replicate the problem enough to determine that there is a module (5F) which controls both the infotainment system and the proximity sensors and was somehow able to learn where the factory has changed the coding for this module in new cars being manufactured now. So although there are not any service bulletins out on this yet, he installed the new coding and refreshed the system. Hopefully, this is a fix for the problems some of have been experiencing.

Purchased our ID.4 a month ago and the dealer is about to install the 3rd infotainment screen!! Our dealer seems unaware of any planned software updates and according to them, VW is telling them to replace the screen. Each time the screen goes blank, freezes or a new error pops up I’ve been able to capture it on video and have sent it to the dealer.

Really. That is fucking crazy. I had to reboot the center console last week. I have owned the ID.4 since May 22nd and last week was the first time I had no audio, so I stopped the car and rebooted the center console by holding the power button down for 10 seconds. These center consoles are essentially Android OS, so this is rock-solid software.

I am happy with the ID.4. I understand that VW is NOT a software company. I will give it a pass on software issues. I bought the ID.4 since I wanted solid mechanical engineering, which is why I am still happy. I think the VW group should play to their strengths and focus on just mechanical engineering. Let Google make the software and self-driving systems.
Thanks for the heads up on the 10 second thing... 3rd day with my 1st edition and my screen was black and wouldn't come back on
Four months in on our new ID.4 Pro. Woke up to TWO blank screens this morning, for the first time. Tried the 10-second Infotainment power button, and BOTH screens came back to life. Thank you all so much for the above posts, and in particular, the photo by majorgearhead, which showed where the power button was located.

I used your fix (removing the two fuses (F46 and F30) and then replacing). Worked like a charm. Both screens are back to normal.
I had let the car "rest" for about 45 minutes and then just sat back in to see if it was working again. No luck. Then went to plan B and the fuses.
F46 was a little tough to remove with my fingers so I used a needle nosed pliers.

Also, this was the first time I removed the fuse box cover. Very difficult to pull off. Did you have a similar problem the first time?

Thank you for posting this suggestion.

Hi I had this issue a couple of months ago. My ID 4 is still in the garage. Very frightening when it happens while driving.
