My wife was driving her id4 last Sunday and the breaks slammed and some alarm went off warning of an impending front collision. Luckily, there were no cars in front or behind her. I just took the car to the dealer and they claim they could not find the log for the event. The technician told me that he needs to know the exact date, time to the minute precision because there is no way to search the logs! As an engineer, I have a hard time understanding that. Has anyone else experienced such an event? We are pretty concerned!

If you keep up speed anticipating the lane will be clear, the car thinks you're about to hit it and set off the alarm. There is a setting to turn down the sensitivity of the collision warning that you could try.

So funny, my next door neighbour has recently purchased a new Mercedes. his wife started driving it 3 weeks ago, and reported that the car loses power all the time when behind other vehicles and warning lights flash up on the dashboard, and sometimes it brakes all on its own, its annoying her. After investigation by the dealer they found nothing wrong and so she asked them to come driving with her to show the problems, she is just driving too close to other cars (she is a TERRIBLE tailgating driver).

I'll get the occasional code red man your battle stations assume the crash position collision imminent dashboard alert on a tightly curved section of our narrow residential street, but have yet to experience the auto brake in this car.

In my other car, approaching others to aggressively at stop signs triggers it, particularly on wet nights. That car is camera only, no radar, and say probably older tech. It's scary how matter of fact it is. I imagine the ID.4 is equally absolute, to the peril of any closely following drivers.

It was something about no driver present or something like that. I grew up driving manual stick shifts and I don't need to be lectured by the car on how to drive.

Thanks for your reply. My wife is actually a very safe driver and that day was a Sunday morning and according to her the road was totally clear. I have disabled the feature until we get some sort of sw upgrade. Does anyone know when the promised sw update is coming to the US?

Was she been using the Travel Assist? Based on my short 4 days driving, the car throw 2 emergency brakes on me with TA. Both situations are with the front car leaving the lane, and it took the car a while to recognize the next car ahead. So it slammed on the brake and threw me a message to brake when it detect the next car. I'd say for 80% of the time, TA works great. But it still needs a lot of improvement, especially some faster processors.

I don't get any notice like this if I'm not using travel assist. Did you enable TA?

I did..they found nothing wrong...they could not even find a log entry for it.

I think that you should just take it to the dealer. Obviously it is not working like everyone else’s.

Yes TA will put on the brakes pretty hard if it thinks you don’t have enough room to stop. I do like the audible/visual warning of imminent disaster too.

Nope I was driving routinely and this is the first time this has happened. In the car's defense, it does not like my lazy driving.

Mine only happened when I have the TA activated, and when I cross the line without blinking the light. It will light up the side of the line I crossed in yellow, and shake the steering wheel. You can still force it thru tho. But as soon as I tap on the brake, it never has any issue with me crossing the line.

I'll take the opposite tact and – despite all of us here being perfect, attentive, non-distractible drivers, I hope this tech is paying off in accidents avoided and lives saved because Lord knows there are some heavily distracted eyeballs out there.

So, the collision warning you mentioned is that red round sign popping up on the small screen, with a car and an asterisk? If so, I've seen it twice. You don't have to be in an accident, it pops when the car thinks you are too close and it has to throw in an emergency brake. And it's gone after you stopped, right? If there's nothing in front of you, check the front of your vehicle, was the ACC sensor area or the cameras on your windshield dirty? Covered by dead bugs? Try to run it thru a car wash and see if it gets better?

I saw it when the car was in TA, it didn't detect the parked car and all of a sudden it did and scared itself to give a hard brake. Mine even show me another warning in red telling me to brake. Both times happened to me when I was trying to see how TA handle these situations without my input.

I read somewhere that young drivers were actually becoming bad drivers because of all the tech like back up cameras and side collision monitoring systems. They became lazy drivers since they relied on the tech. I'd be concerned with a car that randomly brakes because of phantoms. This isn't the first time I have heard of this either.

The only thing I don't like about TA so far is it cannot predict, and it will deactivate the lane-keeping without enough warning sound or notice. It happened a few times to me that it cannot handle a curve in the middle, the green lines disappear and the car just goes towards the sideline without significant notice or warning. This is one thing I like about the ioniq 5, it can read the map, and if it thinks you are too fast for the corner, it will warn you to take over before entering the corner, and slow down the car while still trying its best to make it thru. Other than this, I like the softer way of ADAS on VW. It's not as aggressive to fight the driver like a Tesla would do.

There is a name for that: phantom braking. Tesla is under investigation from the NHTSA over that.

I am all for technology and safety features.That was one of the reasons for buying the car. However, they must work correctly or they can cause accidents. For now, I am disabling driver assist at least until a software update.

Long shot, but maybe some sensor was dirty? Or if something kicked up into it, or some large bug/bird hit the sensor and obscured it? I have a camera based system on my current car that has once or twice panic-braked in poor visibility, so wondering if some weird occurrence triggered the system. The ultrasonic sensors are in the front bumper area I believe, so she may not have seen something low that tripped it erroneously. Regardless, very worrisome and makes sense to disable until it is solved. I’m sure you can find plenty of sympathy on Tesla forums these days!!
