Can You Flat Tow EVs to Recharge Them? Yes, but There Are Asterisks
We ask experts how easy it is, and their responses vary.
I see this as only being used as an emergency situation, just to get enough energy to get to the next charging station, not a planned charging activity. The efficiency of power, actually lack of, would be enormous. A nod to that with a tow vehicle making 5mpg during tow. Even with a bi-directional vehicle giving a jump start/charge would be pretty inefficient.
im sure does did the patent as a defensive position, keeping others from doing it as a patent violation.
The only real life, non-emergency is discussed was flat tow behind an RV, which actually makes sense but probably need to redesign the smaller vehicle to allow true neutral towing for that to avoid damage. Every other scenario assumes a driver in the car (assuming matching our ID sensing exit) to maintain a drive setting.
Thinking back to my BMW i3, perhaps a small trailer with a generator mounted and a couple gas tanks (or propane, or bio-diesel) would be equally effective in emergency rescues.
Yup - No manufacturer is going to recommend you do it for liability reasons, but it does work and you don't have to tow it very far to get an extra 25 miles of range to make it to the next charging facilityI see this as only being used as an emergency situation, just to get enough energy to get to the next charging station, not a planned charging activity
Just get them to tow you to the top of the nearest hill, and then use Regen all the way down! lolInteresting story in Motor Trend.

The car doesn’t know the difference between being towed and being driven downhill!Just get them to tow you to the top of the nearest hill, and then use Regen all the way down! lol
