Can't adjust volume using steering wheel or sliders

Occasionally, my volume adjusters stop working. They will bring up the volume bar on the screen but no adjustment of audio volume will take place. Voice activation still works to adjust the volume, however. This problem has happened maybe 2 or 3 times since I've had the car (~2 weeks and ~750 miles). I think each time it has happened I was using Android Auto. The problem has always gone away if I reboot the infotainment system or get out of the car.

Any one else have this problem? Is it more likely an Android Auto thing or an infotainment bug?

I have not had that issue, but I do not use Android Auto yet. There still seems to be some glitches with Android Auto that VW needs to work out.
I've had that issue/bug. You want to change the entertainment volume, but it is stuck on voice.

Solution : Hit the voice button on the steering wheel, then cancel. Or turn off voice entirely (which is what I did)

I've seen what you describe, Timbobh. Geo - turning off voice stops "Hello ID" from working, correct? I don't want to do that, but your suggestion of hitting voice & then cancelling might work. Thanks for the tip.

Geo's got that right. I've experienced same.
experienced the same.. android auto (wireless) sometimes the volume won't respond, only voice audio can be adjusted.

My temp solution is to use "Hello ID" then issue command "increase audio" or "increase volume". Don't recall which worked and it's not 100% successful with that voice command either.
Cool solutions. I've restored to rebooting the infotainment system, but this sounds more practical.

I'm my case (it's happened 3 times) I can adjust the volume down but not up (or was it the other way around?). I'll try the voice command trick, but hope we get our OTA in a few weeks to squash this.

I experienced the same thing whenever I use Android Auto. There seems to be a bug in the system. Here's a possible workaround that seems to have worked: Press the Pause button on the Infotainment system, then press it again to resume play. Now try the volume control; it might work again. As a side note, this problem seems to be related to the volume of your navigation system. If the audio of your navigation systems is low, then the audio of your music system is "stuck" at that same setting. Hope this helps.

I've had this happen at least once in the two weeks I've had my id.4. Click voice and tell it to cancel voice operation. This also started happening with my 2016 sportwagen, where voice operation needs to be canceled before I can adjust audio volume again. Seems like an Android Auto problem.
I've had no issues with the steering wheel volume switch. "Hello ID, increase/decrease volume" has worked for me as well. But I do recognize there are gremlins lurking in this software-heavy vehicle.
The volume slider issue happened to me again this morning. Hitting the voice command button on the steering wheel and then canceling through the infotainment screen fixed it immediately. Much better than the full reset I was doing before. Thanks for the tip!

May I ask what software version you are running?

I'm pretty sure it's 0792. I'll have to double check though. FWIW, I think this is an Android auto glitch. Not a VW infotainment one.
Yeah could be, Jon from regular evdad was also complaining that the latest android update broke some stuff for him.
It’s amazing though how many people are still driving around with older code
We’ve had this happen before, as recently as tonight. Volume doesn’t work and when you swipe the volume below the infotainment system, it says “Telephone” and shows the volume at a stuck level. We’ll try the solutions offered here, but I wanted to point out it’s happens with iPhones, too. We’ve completely shut down both phones and it still says telephone, so it’s definitely a big!

Edit: I forgot to add that it happens right after I unlock the car and before I even get in, the audio system says “The emergency call cannot be made at this time.” I hadn’t pushed anything on the key fob, so not sure how it’s related.
