Yesterday I connected the EVSE at home at around 25% SOC. After ~2hrs the charging stopped (53% SOC) and the light turned red. I disconnected the charger and this morning I noticed Electrical System Not Working Properly message. The car drove fine, and after work I tried charging at EA. It didn't start, got the red light trying 3 plugs at 2 chargers. I tried again at home, same problem. I scheduled an appointment but it's on Monday. Any tricks to reset the car to allow charging?

Congratulations! Yours is the first report I recall reading of a charging fault that affects both the L2 and DCFC, which in large part are two separate systems. I can't think of any tips to make this go away, other than see what your friendly neighborhood service technician has to say.

Received an update from the service department this morning:

"We are leaning towards there being some type of electrical short circuit in the wiring inside of the charging cable from between the plug on the outside of the car down to the battery, so he is working on disassembling that now to inspect the wiring"

Thoughts ?

Could it be a rodent has chewed the wiring?
Any short should afaik be reported by the charging module.
Without the internally logged errors from the modules we can't really conclude much from the outside.

The dealer should be able to order a new connector with full wiring behind it.
Pricy, but as long as it's not rodent damage, it should be covered by the warranty.

@VW TECHNICIAN might have more insight.

It could be AC-DC inverter....there are wiring on both sides.....i have not yet seen one AC-DC inverter going bad. When charging on L1 or L2 AC is going over AC-DC inverter first then HV DC pack. If cause is manufacturers defect it will be warranty...if not it will be insurance ( if covered under policy for Rodent) or out of pocket for owner.

I got an update. They believe it is a "module" and VW is aware of issues with it. Just in case they are also ordering a socket and the cable. In a meantime, I need to refresh my memory on pumping gas ...;)

So it's been a week and they are still waiting for the module. What are my options, waiting patiently another week, call VW 1-800? The car is out of comission since January 2nd, I'm getting frustrated... 😬

Not surprisingly the service department has been delivering the bad news in small doses. The last text message I received stated the part is on backorder. What the heck? VW makes hundreds of ID.4s a week in US but a replacement part is not available? I'm getting frustrated, and when I called VW all they could say was "talk to your dealer". Has anyone been in a situation they waited weeks for a part? Is there a way to escalate the case? What are my options here?

This is the same situation I'm in. Level2 doesn't work. Dealer tried passing the blame to my home electrical. I plugged in at the dealer to show them. Didn't v work there either. They said it needs a new on board charger for the ac to dc converter. They ordered the part and said it's on national backorder, and they have a second notification on my account that the past will be here Thursday. So who knows. The service advisor said she would call tomorrow with more information. Id 4 pro 2 awd Purchased 12/22/22 Taken in 01/18/23 First response 1/23/23

Hopefully I jump line (lol) and get taken care of. The dealer actually "seems" helpful. We'll see. Im just just glad I'm not crazy thinking it was the evse I had purchased. I went through 3 thinking the problem was on my end,(there's no way a BRAND NEW car could have something wrong.) Atleast the problem is diagnosed and something ordered.

In my case the car did not initiate the charge regardless if it was AC or DC. The dealer did not mention the AC charger, they said "module". I'm thinking perhaps some kind or "relay" or a static switch that passes the electricity when the "hadshake" is made. I have not seen any diagrams, so it's just my imagination at work.
I'm planning on reaching out to VW thru their FB account, will update on the progress, or lack of it ...

Mine worked for dc fast charging perfectly. But I couldn't at the house. I asked if I can have the vehicle released until the part arrives and they said VWoA will not allow the vehicle to be released without liability waivers signed. So I'm just going to stick with the loaner for now.

All I know is every forum is reporting the same delays for EV parts. Welcome to 2023.
What I'm struggling with is the fact Chatanooga produces (or targets) up to ~1,500 cars a week, and of course, the supplier makes at least ~1,500 modules. Why VW (after 2 full years of the product failure data) couldn't accurately estimate the fail rate and add that extra percentage into the order? I accept that I may need to wait for a part several days, maybe 2 weeks, but so far all I can hear is "we don't know when it will arrive". Not cool :confused:

I hear you. Especially since they stopped taking orders because they have enough supply to fulfill the dealers inventory. One would think they could just toss the part in a box and send it. Usps is 3-5 day in the contiguous US, which is a realistic time line. But "national backorder" just seems wierd.

Sorry to hear of these delays getting parts. This is the reason I am not comfortable road tripping this car.

It is frustrating. I've needed parts twice for my 2021 and part delivery took about 4 weeks each time (airbag followed by seat wiring harness), total repair 5ish weeks allowing for diagnostics and actual parts installation

Hopefully you've already gotten this resolved, but: That message, and a problem with charging, is the same thing that happened to me when I tried to DCFC my car after picking it up from a body shop that had repaired it after someone crashed into us. They hadn't filled the coolant enough, and the car really didn't like driving, or trying to fast-charge, without the right level of cooling fluids. (Which is good!) I took it back and topped up the coolant, and it was good to go after that.

Anyone else who gets a similar message might try that before taking it to the dealership, if you're comfortable with that approach.
