Is just me or does anyone else find it odd that the charging cable will not release after charge is complete despite the car being unlocked. If the car is locked I expect the charge port to be locked, but if the car is unlocked the charge port should only be locked during an active charging session.

I finally released the cable by pressing the fob unlock. For a New York minute I thought I wouldn't be able to disconnect the charging cable.

I have "Home" set up as a charging location so set the home location to auto unlock for next time. I'll see next weekend if that resolves my issue or not. The charging screen is designed to frustrate, it shows 'Auto unlock" and a grayed out slider. It would be nice to have a "unlock charge port" slider on the charging screen. VW have some UI flaws to work out.

Over the past six months the plug locking for me with my home ChargePoint L2 has changed as well. Initially I had to unlock the vehicle with the key fob to thereby release the plug. But for the latter ~4-of-6 months of my ownership I haven't even needed the key fob on me for it to release (the ease of which still surprises me given my early experience).

I've had no charging settings other than 80% limit for quite some time (no location, etc). I could have sworn there was an OTA update awhile back that accommodated this unlocking change but can't be as I've had V2.1 (0792) since delivery. Then again, the Auto Hold setting if memory serves wasn't greyed out upon delivery but has been for a similarly longer period. 🤷‍♂️

This may be a stupid question, but do you have the "Automatically release connector" option set in the Vehicle menu? I turned that on and mine unlocks automatically when charging is done. They mention this in the Charging the high-voltage battery chapter in the manual:

I do now :) I set that for the "Home" location. I will see if that resolves the issue next time we charge. Thanks for your input!!

Let me know how that works. I didn’t set a home location because some said it was buggy… so I’d be curious to know if it works well for you :)

I'm with you JP and will raise it one further: I feel if the car is unlocked, the charging cable should remain unlocked, in that if I press the button on the charging handle, charging terminates and I can remove the handle.

It seems as silly to have to press the unlock button on an unlocked car and then also press the charging handle button as it sits to have to use my fingerprint twice consecutively to get into Car-Net.

I think Nissan does this much better. You have three options: 1. Never lock the charger, 2. Automatically unlock the charger when complete, 3. Charger remains locked until driver disengages it regardless of charge status. They have a special button on the key fob just to unlock the charger. For the longest time I would run out to get something from the ID.4 while it was charging without realizing that when I opened the door the charge would terminate. I thought there was something wrong with the car.

Mine unlocks as soon as you approach the car, regardless if It is charging or not (I have unlock on approach enabled).
Think that might be a 2.3 change.

only slight annoyance i have is that the charging door doesn’t unlock on approach. Eventough all car doors unlock on approach, the charge door needs a manual unlock on the fob, or an opening of the driver door to unlock.

I have unlock on approach as well, however the car was unlocked when I plugged it in so there is no action when I approach later since the car is already unlocked.

Then there's the scenario where you go to your garage without the car keys and simply want to remove the plug because it has finished charging.

Fully agree with you. Just an idiotic implemention. Last time it took me 5min to get the plug out many lock unlock attempts on the fob where needed. Crazy

The home location with appropriate setting does work. Charge completed at 11:30 last night while we were sleeping and I was able to unplug this morning.
The setting to auto release the connector is the last option in the menu, you have to scroll quite a way to locate it. Seems to work fine now I have it set.

I still don't like the way this is set up. Why should the charging stop because I unlock the car to retrieve something? Why should the charger unlock because I unlock the car or vice versa? I don't see the connection between the two. They should be independent of each other. There are many scenarios where the car is charging and I may want to enter the vehicle and have it not affect the charge.

Does the ID.4 stop charging when you unlock it? Must admit I haven't tried that.

I can unlock my Model 3 without interrupting charging. In fact the charge port remains locked until I press the release button on the plug handle.

One thing I don't like about the VW setup is after unlocking the charge port at charge completion it reports the car as unplugged, which I assume means it would not resume charging if the charge level dropped several percent.

I tried this today and it doesn’t stop charging when I unlock it… it only stops charging when you hit the Stop button on the screen or iPhone app.

That makes sense. Thanks for passing on your experiences.

I think the charge port does not need to locked in the first place or i should have at least that option. Just another stupid issue has if we do not have enough already on this car.

An option would be good. There is a use case for locking the port at public charging locations.

This is NOT how mine behaves. When the doors unlock (either via the fob or me walking near the car) the charger changes from flashing green (charging) to white (stopped). This also unlocks the charging cable. I thought something was wrong with the car because it kept stopping the charge until I figured out it what it was doing.

The charging software is buggy even on 2.3, and my current issues are not mirrored in other 2.3 users, for example - it makes it kind of difficult to help each other out as the goal posts keep shifting - love, LOVE the GTX, and I guess the bugs are part of the personality...
