My apologies if this has been answered previously. I plan on purchasing an ID4 the end of this month and then I plan on purchasing a Model 3 next year.

I will not need to charge both vehicles at the same time.

what are the simplest ways of setting up level 2 charging in my garage so I will be able to charge both vehicles? Do I set it up for a Tesla and buy an adapter for the VW? Vice versa? I’m am very new to this and just want to make sure I can charge both vehicles in my garage. (I will be hiring an electrician). Thanks in advance.

I would get a unit with a J1772 plug on the end that fits the ID4. The Tesla will come with an adapter that allows you to use the J1772 to charge it as well.

Tesla just released a Wall Connector that has a J1772 plug on the end. Could easily charge both cars. Not a smart WiFi connected charger, but it is a good price. $415.

I second what @Mrau wrote. You can substitute any wall charger for the Tesla unit, although its price is definitely great if you don't need WiFi and/or smart features. My son charges his Model Y at my garage via his adapter all the time (free solar electricity helps too ;)).

If you want all the 'smart' features for $400, the GoPlug Pro 32 is a good option.
I like that they sell a kit with adapters for all the common plugs (NEMA 5-15, NEMA 10-30 and NEMA 14-30 to NEMA 14-50 ) for only $40:
Is the app they provide any good? And does it let you do scheduled charging easily?

@Mrau has the right approach. The adapter for J1772 to tesla is $250. I was watching Tom moloughney on YouTube and that is what the adapters costs. But Tesla comes with their own adapter to charge on the Industry standard plug.

I got a Charge-point recently and have not installed it. I recommend it if you want to get 48 amps. 48 amps charges at 32/mph as opposed to 28/mph for 40 amps. This specific to the ID.4 given its Kwh/mi efficiency.

To be honest, since my wife was in the hospital for a month and I've been driving right by the EA charger, I've only used my home EVSE twice, briefly, so I'm not yet up to speed on all the features the app provides. I can say though that the company responds very quickly to any inquiries and seem eager to help you with any questions

Is there any advantage to getting the Electrify America home charger, considering that EA is supposedly the official VW charging company? Possible future features, like "you get a rebate on your electricity bill as part of our promotion" for example?

I read through the manual, and it looks like good features, and as a software engineer I like their open API. If I don't like their app or want a custom feature, I can write my own app  I think using their app or a browser over wifi will be a much better way to monitor the charge rate, SOC, etc. compared to Car-net. I just ordered 1 with all the cables I linked above for every common type of plug.

Edit: I also like their easy remote over wifi adjustment of charging rate so I can easily use it with my solar charging trailer I describe here:
