Charging line 18+ cars at Quartzite AZ EA on 11/26/22

On plugshare there are now pictures of the long line of cars waiting to charge on 11/13/22 and 11/26/22. This is the only EA station between phoenix and Palm Springs so it is vital. There are only 4 dispensers there. I counted 18 cars in line but there might be more cars behind the last white car in line in the distance. I have charged there but there was no line then.

Yikes... That's why I would never drive a CCS EV on long road trips or areas where there are limited chargers. Even my experience from NorCal to SoCal back in November 2022 wasn't that great.
I’ve charged in Quartzite several times and this EA location is really bad. Cramped, no space to queue, and typically only 2-3 of the 4 chargers working. Meanwhile there is a Tesla supercharger on the other side of the highway with 10-20 stalls and plenty of parking. This crappy EA station is probably responsible for selling more Teslas than Elon ;)

That's why I carry a Tesla Tap Mini just for these occasions.

Tesla Tap Mini does not work at DCFC. Only works for level 1 or level 2 AC chargers.

Hopefully that supercharger gets the mod to allow non-Tesla charging. Seems like that upgrade would pay for itself in short order.

Wow. That's crazy!
It will only get worse before it gets better.... I have been more than once in 10+ EV lines waiting for my spot to get some juice. Tesla will not be any better once they push more vehicles to the market, they already suffer with service departments appointment times....especially service department that is distribution hub and repair facility, there is not enough parking spaces. All fast DC charging locations should have L2 charging spots to help out for people who have time to consider L2 in this scenario.

That's bad enough but then the guy your waiting on to finish is charging to 100%
It's shameful how few chargers EA installs in many of their locations. This seems to be changing (slowly) as the new locations seem to be getting more but they definitely were cautious in the beginning and have been slow to scale up.

In the telephone business they used to say they had to size their networks for "Mothers Day Load" - everyone would call their mother on Mothers Day and stretch the telephone switching networks to their limits. EA should start sizing charger installations (especially in out of the way places like this) for holiday weekend loads!

The thing about Quartzite is that although it's an easy case to make that EA should build a "super site" at that location with 10 chargers, due to there being so few fallback options around, the same can be said for dozens of their other interstate locations spread 100 miles apart.

Quartzite seems like an obvious super-location now since it links two EV-friendly areas, but where the heck is EVGo or anybody else?

EA started strong and covered the nation with 4-post sites, making getting around actually possible. But yeah, they've got the data now, the EVs are on the road in numbers that weren't there a scant 18 months ago. Unfortunately Quartzite does not look like an easily upgradable site because there is underground fuel storage on both sides of the existing stalls, but that Love's has a dozen parking spaces on the opposite side of their parking lot that seem to be out of the way of everything but a propane tank.

Thankfully when I rolled through there (18 months ago) all four dispensers worked and I was the only EV.

Do we have any information on the government money for new charging stations setup..like where they are being built & stuff..
Most of them are in the NEVI program that each state controls, and they keep revising, so that makes mapping it complex like this thread:

Earlier EA sites were more like a dog marking his territory, but allowing for future upgrades, and keeping competitors out.. But not all sites are easily expandible past a certain point.
I just noticed that a new Tesla supercharger site has opened in Sutherlin, Oregon (off of I5) with 51 charging cables!! I hope some of them will get the CCS adapters. Why can't EA and others do this?

EA in the entire state of Michigan is absolutely pathetic. In the 4 months I have had my id.4 I have Never found one open. there are only 4 chargers in a 60+ mile radius (highly populated area) and 1 charger has been down EVERY time I tried to charge. Always always a line. The 3 years of free charging is almost wortheless.

Tesla's solution to this was to limit charging to 80% and in some instances a specific time. When I had my Model 3 SR+ and it was a busy location you will be notified that you had only 30 minutes to charge and the charger will stop automatically and if it not disconnected in time the cost of the parking fee was much higher.

EA can do the same here and cap a location to 80% charging however the issue becomes in these charging station deserts. Where sometimes you need to go 100% just to get to the next charger. In this scenario the only real answer is more chargers unfortunately.

If Tesla would equip them with a MagicDock, I’d use them more than the mediocre EA chargers by the Dairy Queen.

Because EA isn't selling millions of EVs to back fund that development like Tesla is.

Every sale of every Tesla funds the Tesla SC network. No sale of any EV funds EA. EA is funded by a limited $2 billion judgement for Dieselgate. And $800 million of that is going specifically to California.

Clearly though Quartzsite needs to be built out a bit more though.
