new owner here. First night trip with the car. I noticed the volume and climate control touch buttons didn’t light up making them hard to find. Is this how it is supposed to be or is there a bulb out perhaps?

thanks!

"Supposed to be." Except, I can't imagine anybody intended this.

I hope VW will come up with a retrofittable part to correct this, but being that's about as likely as you handing me a winning lottery ticket.

This is one of the items I and a number of others added to our lists of ID.4 improvements requested of VW.

btw: I presented my list to my dealership Prez and salesman just before my 60-day "double check" service visit and they indicated they intended to send along to VWoA thru their channels. So who knows ....

I recall that some euro owners have confirmed theirs lights up. And I seem to recall that VW was made aware and looking to rectify this...something about forgetting about it for the US.

I adjust volume by the buttons on the right side of the steering wheel at night. Not much that I can do for the heating though. This was a design brain fart and since it is hardware related we'll just have to work around it.

Just for fun, I am investigating a very low power red LED mini spot that would mount hidden up by mirror and illuminate controls area (similar to some Audi and VWs). Long shot ...
My 2003 Passat had that dim red "cockpit illumination" and I loved it. The way the lights were placed made them almost invisible (unless you went searching). The first couple times I drove that car at night, it felt like magic. "How am I seeing this stuff in the dark? My eyes aren't that good."

Yes! Same with the 06 Jetta, 13 Audi Allroad, 15 Passat, 16 Volvo S60, 17 BMW i3. They all have that fantastic light, why not in the ID.4? SMH.

I'm considering painting on symbols just below the bar with glow in the dark paint, but I'm worried that it will look terrible in daylight. Perhaps it wouldn't show up too badly with the white trim, but I'm a little nervous about getting the paint off cleanly if I don't like it. Glow in the dark stickers could be a safer test.

If my hand is already busy on the center screen then yes, it's more automatic to used the center volume bar. Though I've got to say that "swiping" across the steering wheel volume control is very well executed.

A frequent passenger (a family elder) is often cold and likes his side warm, but he hasn't been with us at night yet.

The designers almost certainly thought that people would change the temp through the infotainment and the volume via the wheel when it's dark out. Seems pretty short-sighted to me to not even have illumination as an option. how much would three LEDs possibly add to the cost?

Honest question. You have volume controls on the steering wheel, and can adjust temp with your voice or the Climate menu, and the ID.4 has automatic climate control. Are folks really touching those buttons that frequently??
It does not come up very often, no. The automatic climate control is quite good, and so are the automatic heated seats. However, there are times when driving at night that I would like to adjust the temperature or volume, and when I automatically reach towards the center console and realize that I can't see anything there. The biggest annoyance is the mute button, since we don't have one on the steering wheel.

You can mute/pause media by tapping the infotainment power button on the lower left below the screen. Sure it's not on the wheel and it's just a touch sensitive button, but I've found it to work quite easily and it detects my tap even when I'm rather off target.
