So I just got my car back from a week at the dealership to replace the coolant pump. They called this morning and let me know that the pump that VW originally said to replace has now turned into replacing both. I didn't know there was a driver and passenger pump. It's also possible that they replaced the wrong pump. Back to the shop.

Well, the parts diagram shows that there COULD be 2, listed as parts 8 and 9 in the diagram here: Hoses & lines.. 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 (vw.com)

And a picture of the offender from another thread on the forum: id4_additional-water-pump-coolant-pump-3-jpg.5139 (1080×808) (vwidtalk.com) The overall thread is (24) Pro S Battery Coolant Pump failure after 1300 miles!! | Volkswagen ID Forum (vwidtalk.com)

Looks like maybe they got a bad batch from their Chinese parts supplier? Oddly they look like they also have a motor controller from the picture with a software version, so maybe they got loaded with the wrong software at the factory?

So there are 2 pumps. The diagram given to the dealership from VW engineer is from the underside of the car, which said to replace the passenger side pump. The 25 year veteran mechanic figured out they had it wrong, conferred with engineer and the engineer had it wrong. There may be many pump replacements done on the wrong pump.

Sounds a bit like VW is not sure if it is actually a mechanical pump issue, software-related or simply a bleed-issue...will be interesting to see where it ends up.

Interestingly, it does seem to have affected European cars, including our FEs - with the delays in ID. Software 2.3 to US buyers, maybe it is software-related?

Clicking on the link to Hoses and Lines I see component number 8, Auxiliary water pump is no longer available.
When you click on the part number it takes you to another page with a new part number that supersedes the original.

Sounds like they had a faulty pump design.

Here's the new part #

1EA965567A has been replaced with 1EA965567D

Wonder if this is third revision of the pump or if VW just jumped from Rev A to Rev D.

Yeah, I think we've put to bed that there are in fact 2 coolant pumps in the ID.4. The reason for the issues seems to vary from bubbles to faulty pumps for a variety of different reasons according to just about everyone. LOL
