I am wondering if anyone has programed a NFC card that can be used with EA chargers.

I think this would be helpful in dead zone areas and also, I hate the idea of having their app on my phone if not necessary.

If you have done this can you post how it has went and even a guide if you do not mind. It would be appreciated!

Thank you!

If you have an iphone, you can save your EA card to Apple wallet. You can recall and use it whenever, even if you don't have data. After you add it to wallet, just double tap the lock button when your iphone is locked, then select the EA card from the list. Works on the apple watch too.
The card will actually auto-select when you tap your phone on the NFC reader on the station. No need to select the EA card from wallet first.

Which NFC reader? There are two.

In the Android world, there is no wallet, but you can enable "Pay with NFC" in the EA app. Once you do that, you can tap your phone at the NFC reader that is not associated with the credit card reader, and it initiates charging. I don't think the app needs to be open - just the phone unlocked.

I would also add that chargers also need to communicate with the mother ship. Typically done with a cellular modem, in a region with no cell service, I suppose they could instead run a copper wire.

There's a location beneath or adjacent to the credit card reader where there's an icon of a card and radio waves. That's where you tap the phone. Which is to say NOT the credit card reader.

Thank you all for the advice on the wallet/ apps.

I was looking for a physical non battery and/or cell signal dependent solution. I know nfc card can be written to (though I have not done it) and I thought it would be have to have an EA charging card that I could either keep in our wallets or in the car. Plus I don't want the app on my phone and I don't like to use wallet apps.

I thought I read a thread here a long time ago where someone mentioned doing this, but I could not find it via the search.

Hopefully someone knows if this is possible and can point me in the right direction, or can definitively tell me to give up.

Thank you all for the advice and suggestions. I am on android for now. I have zero faith in Google so I have not looked much into their wallet.

Thanks again everyone.

I do this all the time, just hold the back of the phone to the NFC area on the charger. That is it. Works every time - IF the EA charger is working!!!

I don't believe they currently have a card but if enough people ask for one maybe they will offer one in the future. I have a ChargePoint, Blink and EVGo as backup networks and cards for each. As for EA, I just my phone or watch on the NFC pad and that generally works. I have to avoid the credit card reader tho as one time it wants to use my credit card if I get too close.

I called them, I asked, they don't offer a card, citing all the reasons noted in the replies above.

Hopefully since the OP has gotten along this far, waiting a few more months (hopeful thinking) for Plug and Charge to be rolled out will solve this problem.

@daikon is it the app itself you object to, or the location tracking? I haven't tried it but would denying location access to the app ease your concerns? For iPhone users, once you save the EA "card" to your Apple Wallet, does the card remain if the app is deleted?

Just out of curiosity, I deleted my EA app and the pass remained in both my wallet and my Apple Watch after rebooting. Whether or not it still works is another deal. That said, like @Nai3t mentions, you should be able to turn off location services for this app and this will prevent location tracking. However, you will still be revealing location data when you tag your phone to the charger. Because I do a fair amount of traveling for work, I've found the EA app and ABRP to be more convenient at locating chargers but both apps need to know where you are to show nearby locations.

I shared my EA “card” with my significant other and she was able to charge the car. No app on her phone. If I had the equipment (coming soon), I’d try to clone it to a physical card and see what happens.

This sounds very promising! So she was able to clone your digital card to her phone with a reader? Mind sharing what programs you were using? And THANK YOU!

You can share your virtual cards from your Apple wallet with others. Click on the share icon from the card. I’m waiting for some equipment to try cloning from virtual to physical card - wasn’t able to do it using an Android.

Has anyone encountered an EA charger in a dead zone? I haven't but I will be road-tripping soon to FL from NY and if there are any that anyone knows about please post up the location.

If it uses unencrypted tag info, then cloning the tag should be trivial. Run taginfo on one phone and “tap” your Electrify America virtual tag to see what’s going on.
I tried this - iphone 13 with the electrify america card added to apple wallet, scanned with taginfo on a recent android phone. I can read some basic info about the tag but I'm unable to copy it. I only have a bit of experience doing this so I could be missing something. Feel free to suggest things to try.

My goal is to use an NFC card (specifically an NFC ring) to start the charging at EA stations. I already have cards for the other stations and it would be nice to have one for EA instead of an app. Maybe plug and charge comes and makes this idea irrelevant anyways.
