Dashboard Failure

It happens occasionally to some people. Mostly the fix is to reboot the infotainment system (keep the power button next to the volume button pressed for > 10 seconds)

No it was not the Infotainment system. It was the dashboard behind the steering wheel.
The Infotainment system was fine and operable.

Spin had this happen during a recent road trip across NY-PA, losing his speedometer for a stretch. A one-time occurrence which reset itself eventually. He too has ongoing service scheduled. Awaiting add'l feedback.

I will post what VW state. I have also attached the report from the breakdown company - I had 22 failures!

I had the same thing happen to me last weekend while driving home with my family from a dinner out. Right after turning on and putting it into drive, it had the exact same issue you stated. I was able to drive home without any real problems, just annoying not knowing how fast I was driving when no other cars were around on some roads. After letting it 'sleep' overnight, the next morning it was fine and has not done it since.

The funny thing is that morning I had just done my 60 day checkup at the dealer and brought up the other issue I had (with the errors at startup that prevented me from shifting out of park). They checked all the diagnostics and found nothing unfortunately. So far it seems that for most of these issues, letting the car go to sleep (about 10 minutes or so of it being 'off') usually corrects them.

that looks like a faulty ICAS1 computer (main computer).. throwing all the errors. nothing more then going to the dealer and swapping the element.

My ID4 has been back with the dealer for a month (A/C not working so I am using an ID3 loan car.
The other day I was driving along (27 Deg C) outside and the Main screen just went off. The small screen remained on so I could see my speed. After about a minute (think I pressed the power button)
the screen came back on. I put it down to the heat since I could not leave my hand on the back of the infotainment screen without getting burnt. Not very could design if that is the case. Should have thermal protection to prevent over heating.

We got our new VW id4, and in a week this same thing happened. The dashboard already went out! It's at the dealership now, and we have a loaner ICE. Do we need to send back our id4? Should we demand a different car? I didn't imagine this could be an issue, but is this a sign of worse to come? Thoughts?

It happened to me and it was fine the next day.

Something similar happened to me today. Infotainment screen came up black. Just the display area not the edges. Home button no effect. To me just another quirk.
My solution was: manually shutting down with the steering column button. Get out of FE, lock car, get back in, didn't work 😖.
Next: get back in, turn off infotainment screen by pushing and holding off button till I saw the screen go totally off. Get out and lock car. Get back in, let everything boot up, everything seemed to be ok.
Whenever things like that happen, I just try different sequences of shuttling down, getting out, then getting back in.
Different reports here have used the 30 minute rule, shut everything down, get out and wait 30 minutes, sometimes everything's ok.

That happens to me about every second or third time I drive my car. I can usually get the screen back by cycling power on the infotainment unit - hold down its power button for 10+ seconds

Have you visited your dealership? As long as this is intermittent I'm going to wait for 10k miles and see if they can figure it out.
Right now I'm considering it just another quirk. I wonder how much regression testing is being performed before OTA update.

This failure hasn't generated a stored error code (yet), so taking it to the dealer would be a waste of time.
I also consider it an annoyance and hope that it will be eventually fixed with a software update within 6 months (my 1 year purchase anniversary).

It has only happened once to me and came back to normal the next day. I was on a 450-mile road trip at the time with no speedometer and no GOM.

We may not be talking about the same thing... I was referencing post #12 by @BlueDH - I read that to be only failure of the infotainment screen, not the steering column display. My infotainment screen goes dark often and is fixed with a reset; I haven't had the steering column display failure yet.

We had a complete failure after a red warning light indicating high voltage system overheated/fault. All controls wouldn't work. 12 volt battery drained in 45 minutes, parking brakes came off. We were parked on an official cliff top car park. Totally frightening. Car has been with dealer two weeks, they say VW dealer who had it after the breakdown "wiped" the fault codes. Going round in circles with this ultra dangerous failure, dealer trying but no understanding of the car, VW won't not engage! Any help appreciated.
