Those doc fees are capped by law in pretty much all states. I think in Delaware, where I live they are $350.

Less than half the states have caps. Delaware actually has a Document Fee that goes to the State and not the dealer (granted, no sales tax though).

We have a sales tax on motor vehicles of 4.25%. It is the state doc fee. I’m pretty sure the dealer fee goes to the dealer.

During my visit to my "preferred dealer" the "EV Specialist" indicated they will not include a dealer markup for the ID.4.

(Note: I'll drop the quotes when the dealer shows me why, other than proximity, I should prefer to do business with them. If their specialist would exhibit special knowledge and/or skills, that might start tipping the scales in their favor.)

I think any "popularity fee" is BS. The only way to shut it down is if everyone refuses to pay it.

This is true, but the dealer is hoping for someone who has more money than brains, and there are lots of folks like that out there.

Dear friends, I stopped by a dealer a few days ago and they have a id4 from customer who backed off their reservation. I went ahead and leased that one, there's a 3k mark up, is that reasonable? I have had the car for a few days now, I guess there's nothing I can do? Thank you.

It’s supply and demand. My dealer has 5. He can’t sell them......

Agreed, just because a handful of local dealers are asking $2k to $5k over sticker doesn't mean people are paying that. In fact, the more prospective buyers who laugh off that greedy notion and say "text me when you're willing to sell at MSRP," the sooner they'll get the message. Paying markup is like paying ransom to hostage takers, it just encourages repeat behavior.

I guess it depends on how much you want to have the ID.4 now versus waiting bit for one that doesn't have a markup. What spec is the ID.4?

Few of us regulars here would have paid the $3000 markup, as you can tell when reading this and similar threads.
So the question for you is: Does this make you want to return the car and wait for a better deal? Or will you chalk it up to lesson learned and move on?

Have you been looking for a FE? Or did you happen to come across this one? If you're comfortable with the price then by all means go for it. But don't feel like you're forced to go with this one just because it's there.
