Door self opening during drive

22887 Views 317 Replies 48 Participants Last post by  rbdavis808
I have a "fun" problem which is unique to my car. Recently my driver door handle died. The emergency release works, but electronic part is not working. I have taken the car to the service a week ago to diagnose for this problem and now just waiting for the handle part to come in. Since I wasn't given an estimate when the part may arrive I decided to keep driving the car. Opening the door is a bit of hassle and driver door cannot be locked anymore, but this isn't as bad of an issue as the door may randomly open during the drive. It wouldn't be so much of an issue if it opened slightly but stay latched, but it can actually swing open if it happens during the turn so I keep my hand ready on the handle. So, yes, it will be eventually fixed, but I am really concerned with these electronic doors, the behavior of the faulty electronic mechanism and their longevity.

Summary all issues experienced:
  • Both interior AND exterior handles electronic mechanism for door opening sometimes work and other times don't or has delayed response
  • Random clicking sound from the opening motor when no actions are done with the door
  • Door may randomly crack open slightly when the car is parked
  • Door may randomly open while at the stop light, putting the car into Park
  • Driver side door cannot be locked from inside or outside
  • The inside door lock button does not always lock doors
  • Door may randomly swing open when someone is driving in the car
  • Random notifications in the mobile app that the door is opened when no one is opening the doors or near the car. (Could be several notifications within a few seconds)
  • Charging plug gets locked even when the car was done charging and set to release connector

Timeline of repair:
12/29/22 - Diagnosed for issue at VW service, part ordered, no eta for part, no loaner provided and kept the car
1/11/23 - Received loaner and left the car at the dealership, unsafe to drive with door opening randomly
2/1/23 - No update

This doesn't sound like a safe situation. I would take the car into the dealer ASAP and ask to be provided with a loaner until the car can be fixed, because to me, if the door can fly open at random, then the car is undriveable. If the dealer won't cooperate, then I would escalate to VW corporate and stress what an unsafe situation this is.

Ugh. I'm having a similar problem, but it comes and goes. Yesterday, the door kept popping half-open on its own during the first minute of my drive. After finding various other threads, it seems that driver door lock/latch issues are actually common. Hopefully that means the dealerships know how to fix it!
The driver’s side door handle and the other handles just take getting used to. I think most of the issues are from people who just went for a test drive and didn’t have time to figure anything out or they purchased it recently and are still learning their new modern car. I was overwhelmed by the technology for awhile too. But people just need to chill and maybe cup back on the coffee.

Yes, there was some learning curve with the door opening mechanism but that's not the case for me. Door handle/lock just stopped working entirely.

It maybe a safety issue with the door opening but there were no loaners and I didn't want to be without the car which I only need for short drives.

The latch/lock mechanisms of the ID.4 doors are excessively complex and represent another area where the designers threw away 100 years of automotive engineering practice in favor of “Wow! Wouldn't it be KEWL if we did this…”

And I would NEVER drive a car where the door can fully unlatch randomly but that's just me.

I would escalate to corporate VW and make them pay for a car rental under warranty. If the behavior you describe is actually happening as you describe it, it’s a huge safety issue for you and others, and my guess is that you would end up being liable if something bad happened because you continued to drive the car when you knew it it be unsafe.

Just as a point of information, every car on their lot is a potential loaner. You sign a form allowing you to drive the car. Now, that doesn't mean they like to do this. My dealer will though, at least for me.

Apologies but I don't see how that helps. The OP clearly stated that the door just opens on its own. If a door opening and closing procedure needs time to figure it out, then VW have failed. A simple function shouldn't require a learning curve.

I don't for a second think most issues are from people not figuring out how to use their car. I appreciate and respect your admiration for VW and/or ID but faults do happen as with what the OP posted.

I've gotten exactly this reaction when I've raised issues. And I've seen this reaction to others when they've raised issues. But I 100% agree with your view.

Here are some ID.4 things that require lengthy explanations but shouldn't:
  • Locking and unlocking the doors.
  • Unlatching the doors.
  • Operating the child safety locks.
  • Operating the dome light (cabin interior lighting).
  • Basic operation of the headlights and parking lights.
  • Operating the High beams.
  • Unplugging the J1772 charging connector.
  • Turning the radio on and off.
  • And doubtless others…

Just responding to many new posters who are having trouble figuring out their door handles. As soon as the OP posts up their completed workorder then you will know the complete story too. Until then feel free to post up any helpful advice since nobody knows anything about this one-off problem until then.

OP can you please post up your completed workorder when you take it in? I would highly recommend you get it towed to the shop immediately!

I'm happy to learn all the idiosyncrasies of the car because I love it. I appreciate the OP posting this, along with their candor and attitude. I'm not sure why anyone would feel skeptical or dismissive. I shared my ongoing issue because it seemed very similar, and based on my reading, I am also hoping to hear from others who have already had this part replaced.

Patient as ever, I'm still giving my door time to get over its sporadic fits of violent internal kalUNKing. Each time I approach with the fob, I'm filled with optimism and hope that my favorite door will respond to my tender-yet-firm sqeeze and dimple caress as its brethren do. I don't feel betrayed when I firmly shut and lock the door, only to return to find it popped slightly open, almost wistfully. And it breaks my heart each time the handle almost-inevitably dislocates and mechanically complies to my brute force.

I just had a more serious thought -- the other day when I was opening and closing the door in a bonding/troubleshooting session, I heard some serious creaking. I noticed evidence of friction right at the seam in the "Pro S" badge, which resolved after I brushed away the paint dust. The door appears to fit fine, but is it possible my issues are caused by a slight misalignment? I am a bit surprised how little there is to see on the edge of the door for such sophisticated functions. Does anyone know what the one recessed hole is? It looks like an hourglass shape. I suppose those 2 bolts don't do anything helpful.

Just like any car don’t accept something that is broken when it is under warranty. However I do exempt the ID.4’s random error messages (though I did have it checked out at the dealer) because BEV’s are a new technology and I don’t expect them to get everything right at first. I really am not a fan of electro-mechanical-touch doors. They are not very intuitive and I have actually had someone fall on the ground trying to open my unlocked passenger door.🫢
Fair enough. It's hard for me to commit a couple of hours for a dealer visit, at least while they're open. I don't plan on living with this. But I am getting even more curious about how the whole mechanism works in there. Maybe I can find a part schematic or something. Today it did something new -- when I (half) pulled the handle from inside, I could hear it trying to unlatch, but I was unable to push it open.
I had a Passat where the driver’s door would open, but not re-latch (generally when there was freezing fog). To get to work, I lowered the drivers and rear passenger windows an inch, and put a ratchet strap around the B-pillar. (Of course I had to remove the strap to get out in the parking ramp at work… parking inside the ramp always fixed it).

Nice. That happened once in my Jetta, and I just drove 30 miles to work like that. Not a major problem except when making right turns...while shifting gears...

Quick update with all issues experienced:
  • Both interior AND exterior handles electronic mechanism for door opening sometimes work and other times don't or has delayed response
  • Random clicking sound from the opening motor when no actions are done with the door
  • Door may randomly crack open slightly when the car is parked

  • Driver side door cannot be locked from inside or outside

  • Door may randomly swing open when someone is driving in the car
  • Random notifications in the mobile app that the door is opened when no one is opening the doors or near the car. (Could be several notifications within a few seconds)
  • Charging plug gets locked even when the car was done charging and set to release connector
I would have gone to the dealer the first day with that problem. This is a good learning experience for others who have an obvious problem. Don’t wait and regret it.
Small update. Got a loaner Tiguan SE and already regretting my decision. I would rather drive my broken id.4 and take risks with driver door opening then drive a Tiguan. Actually my wife also refused to drive Tiguan, after all this time complaining that id.4 was a safety issue with the door opening and we needed a loaner.

The part situation is a big concern, they cannot give me an estimate when it may arrive and could be months waiting for it as there is no eta. I also insisted to diagnose the issue again just to make sure the part is indeed correct. Here is a list of all issues that I've experienced with this electronic door mechanism failing to work properly:
  • Both interior AND exterior handles electronic mechanism for door opening sometimes work and other times don't or has delayed response
  • Random clicking sound from the opening motor when no actions are done with the door
  • Door may randomly crack open slightly when the car is parked
  • Door may randomly open while at the stop light, putting the car into Park

  • Charging plug gets locked even when the car was done charging and set to release connector
The other thought in my head, lets assume car sits on their lot for a couple of month with no part in sight is this considered a lemon? Not something I want to pursue, but I do have a limit of my patience no matter how much I love the car otherwise.
I just dropped my id.4 for the same thing.
Take many tries to get door open from the outside or inside.(only the drivers door)

Door releases at low speeds

Alarm hold assist disabled

Alarm saying front assist not available

Could be similar issue. Keep us posted what they are going to replace for you and part availability
