I have a "fun" problem which is unique to my car. Recently my driver door handle died. The emergency release works, but electronic part is not working. I have taken the car to the service a week ago to diagnose for this problem and now just waiting for the handle part to come in. Since I wasn't given an estimate when the part may arrive I decided to keep driving the car. Opening the door is a bit of hassle and driver door cannot be locked anymore, but this isn't as bad of an issue as the door may randomly open during the drive. It wouldn't be so much of an issue if it opened slightly but stay latched, but it can actually swing open if it happens during the turn so I keep my hand ready on the handle. So, yes, it will be eventually fixed, but I am really concerned with these electronic doors, the behavior of the faulty electronic mechanism and their longevity.

Summary all issues experienced:
  • Both interior AND exterior handles electronic mechanism for door opening sometimes work and other times don't or has delayed response
  • Random clicking sound from the opening motor when no actions are done with the door
  • Door may randomly crack open slightly when the car is parked
  • Door may randomly open while at the stop light, putting the car into Park
  • Driver side door cannot be locked from inside or outside
  • The inside door lock button does not always lock doors
  • Door may randomly swing open when someone is driving in the car
  • Random notifications in the mobile app that the door is opened when no one is opening the doors or near the car. (Could be several notifications within a few seconds)
  • Charging plug gets locked even when the car was done charging and set to release connector

Timeline of repair:
12/29/22 - Diagnosed for issue at VW service, part ordered, no eta for part, no loaner provided and kept the car
1/11/23 - Received loaner and left the car at the dealership, unsafe to drive with door opening randomly
2/1/23 - No update

Yes, there was some learning curve with the door opening mechanism but that's not the case for me. Door handle/lock just stopped working entirely.

It maybe a safety issue with the door opening but there were no loaners and I didn't want to be without the car which I only need for short drives.

I just dropped my id.4 for the same thing.
Take many tries to get door open from the outside or inside.(only the drivers door)
Could be similar issue. Keep us posted what they are going to replace for you and part availability

Came across this thread and wanted to report that my front passenger door has started opening randomly while driving. It's happened 3 or 4 times in the past two days while driving sometimes over 40 mph. It's pretty scary because the door actually opens enough that you can hear the wind rushing by and the open door light on the dash goes on and the warning beep starts. Really annoying because you can't just reach over and close the door while driving...had to pull over and close the door each time. One note is that it's been raining pretty hard here in Southern California not sure if that has anything to do with it. Anyone have this resolved? FYI mine is a 2023 AWD.
Yup and I got a call today from advisor, they asked me about whether it was raining or car was washed as well because they have another car in their shop with the same issue. Likely bad seal and water damage caused this, but waiting for confirmation.

I got a call today, they first ordered a door latch mechanism, they replaced that cleared some codes but not all, now they just ordered a door sensor. He could only find one in the parts network, that was in California, I’m in New York, so is going to take a few days yo get in. Will up date you all soon.
Did your door release when it was raining? I was asked specifically if that occurred during rain.

While this is bumped, I'd like to say that this list describes my experience exactly (except I think the last 2, though I have notifications off). Today, my door popped itself open during a right turn from a stop sign, which was a first. Thankfully, I was finally able to reach the scheduler at my dealer's service dept. (after their online portal not working, me leaving a voicemail, using their "contact us" form and telling the salesperson who responded to forward my message...) It turns out I still have to wait 10 days just to drop the car off (and insist on a loaner) for a diagnostic appointment. I worry that I'm going to end up needing to tell them how y'all's mechanics solved the problem.
If you have notifications off then you won't get it but you can check the status of the door in the app. Mine stays in open state most of the time. Last point is speculation that door opening during the charging overnight may result in locked charging port in the morning but they need to fix the main issue then I can verify that.

I am hoping to hear something more from my service advisor tomorrow. They have been actively investigating this issue on two id.4s today.

There is another thread on the site which talks about the driver's door locking/unlocking while driving. Don't let the title of the following thread fool you. This is the same issue.

I took my car to the dealership last week to assess the problem. They need to replace the entire door handle to fix it. Apparently, tying the driver door opening to the activation of other circuits is not uncommon with VWs. The tech mentioned that fuel pumps in some ICE models only become active once the door has been opened. So, once the new handle is delivered, painted and installed I will also have the Travel Assist features back online.

After they ordered the door handle (it's coming from somewhere in the States), I was informed that this was the last driver door handle available in stock in North America. Driver door handles are now officially on back order. VW take note about this....there is obviously a weak link here.

For what it's worth, the unlocking is more of a nuisance than a safety issue for me. I've never had the door fully open while driving.
When did they order it for you? I was told it was on backorder with no eta on 12/29 when my car was in service for this issue, but I decided to keep the car since there were no loaner. On 1/11 I got loaner and same update on door handle replacement no eta.

Probably at this point you should take it to dealer to evaluate and order part which might be a while... At least for me

Passenger door would be even bigger safety issue if you are driving by yourself. At least with driver's door you can "catch it"

I am over month waiting for part now, starting to enjoy the loaner simplicity

I just experienced the same issue.
What part did the dealer order?
According to my initial service request they listed handle needed replacement but I insisted they would check again. They also had another car at the same time with same issue so I assumed they are aware of all parts needed

I'm only 8 days in, and I can't say I'm enjoying the Tiguan loaner, considering I just paid $50 to fill the gas tank. I got a response today that they have "only an estimate" of Feb. 8th... All I know is they're waiting for a backordered handle, though I should probably get some more details in writing. No - what I really need to get are my carseats back! At least I know the car is unlocked... and apparently the door is open, at leas according to the app.
I got an update of February 8th today as well. Not much hope though especially when someone mentioned they are going to redesign the part in another thread...

Well my service advisor just called less than 90 minutes after dropping my car off.
They say the passenger door handle needs to be replaced and they have ordered the part.
They say the car can be driven but the door latch needs to operated manually, not electronically.
I'll be picking the car up at lunch time today and will know more after I talk to the advisor.
I thought so too and drove it 2 weeks almost until I stopped enjoying the experience of door opening on its own

Not that they told me.
however while it has continued to lock and unlock on it’s own, it has not unlatched since I got it back.
Did they modify anything?

Traded my 2020 Tiguan SE for new 2023 Tiguan SE loaner. It's bit of improvement and downgrade in a few things. It has nicer style, all digital display dash, added travel assist, led/hid headlights, but also downgrade with more touch sensitive controls and oddly they replaced door button with a physical one which you have to press to unlock.

Oh and small update on my repair from adviser that he may be able to put me back in my car very soon.

Hi all, my drivers side door latch also failed on my 23 pro s. They need to replace the door handle. I am also in the “no eta for part” camp. I will post updates as I get them!
Welcome to the unfortunate club!

I hear my passenger door's locking mechanism when the someone closes the door. Should I start getting concerned? Is this how your problems started with your door randomly opening?
It started when touch sensor stopped working entirely and random clicking sounds of door lock mechanism after you open or close door.
