Door self opening during drive

I have a "fun" problem which is unique to my car. Recently my driver door handle died. The emergency release works, but electronic part is not working. I have taken the car to the service a week ago to diagnose for this problem and now just waiting for the handle part to come in. Since I wasn't given an estimate when the part may arrive I decided to keep driving the car. Opening the door is a bit of hassle and driver door cannot be locked anymore, but this isn't as bad of an issue as the door may randomly open during the drive. It wouldn't be so much of an issue if it opened slightly but stay latched, but it can actually swing open if it happens during the turn so I keep my hand ready on the handle. So, yes, it will be eventually fixed, but I am really concerned with these electronic doors, the behavior of the faulty electronic mechanism and their longevity.

Summary all issues experienced:
  • Both interior AND exterior handles electronic mechanism for door opening sometimes work and other times don't or has delayed response
  • Random clicking sound from the opening motor when no actions are done with the door
  • Door may randomly crack open slightly when the car is parked
  • Door may randomly open while at the stop light, putting the car into Park
  • Driver side door cannot be locked from inside or outside
  • The inside door lock button does not always lock doors
  • Door may randomly swing open when someone is driving in the car
  • Random notifications in the mobile app that the door is opened when no one is opening the doors or near the car. (Could be several notifications within a few seconds)
  • Charging plug gets locked even when the car was done charging and set to release connector

Timeline of repair:
12/29/22 - Diagnosed for issue at VW service, part ordered, no eta for part, no loaner provided and kept the car
1/11/23 - Received loaner and left the car at the dealership, unsafe to drive with door opening randomly
2/1/23 - No update

Any updates? I’m following your journey, because we’re only a few weeks behind you. I really think that we are going to push for a buyback. The lack of communication from VW isn’t sitting well with me.
I’m actually out of state helping take care of my grandson because my daughter had surgery.

I’ll be back on Long Island on Saturday and will go have a talk with the service manager on Monday since they have stopped answering my texts.

I’m sure it’s annoying to have a customer hounding you about a part, but I have only been texting once a week, which I don’t think is excessive.
We went to see the service manager today. She said “We are pressing VW on your part, and they said that they’ll source it quickly. We should have it in 5-10 days”. One would think that if it was available for sourcing, you wouldn’t have kept my car for 32 days, but who knows. I just want my car back.
It has been two weeks since I dropped off my 2021 VW ID.4 AWD Pro S with the Gradient Package. I was told last week that my driver's door handle assembly would be in last Tuesday.
I stopped at Flow VW this afternoon and was told that the part was still not in and then the service advisor admitted that he had no idea when it would arrive.
As I have a loaner, I am willing to wait as the ID.4 id completely too dangerous to drive.
VW is also supposed to send a registered letter to me by the March 31 indicating what will be done to rectify the recall on the the high voltage battery management system to prevent the complete loss of the power to the drive motors under certain reset conditions. I in fact had this happen once, but it recovered quickly. The LED light under the windshield turned red and then quickly came back to normal.
Hopefully, the recall solution will be available while the car is there waiting for the driver's door handle assembly.
I see that some people are having problems with the other doors as well. It appears, that this happening even on some 2023 vehicles.
Perhaps, VW will issue a recall to replace all the door handle assemblies? Otherwise, I am worried that when the other door handle assemblies fail too there will another long wait at the dealer!

I hate that you're in the same position as us- no end in sight. We are thankful for the loaner, but it's just not the same (and I hate stopping for gas). Our dealership says that our case is the first they've heard of the door handle issues. I assured them that it was far from an isolated incident.
My door handle didn’t come in, and my dealer is saying VW is giving them no estimates. So I guess I’m in limbo now too.
Everyone having any door opening while driving needs to report it to NHTSA. This is extremely dangerous and needs to be addressed by a recall as well as the existing one on the 21000 2021
ID.4s that have the software issue that could cause the motor or motors to stop while driving. Both of these are basic safety issues that should not happen on any car.

I got four door handles coming in from Zwickau in two weeks.

Admittedly, they are attached to a car, but hey, door handles..

Awesome, thanks for the helpful comment.

We all will be laughing at his next comment in this thread when one of his handles fails to work one day and he would get no ETA when it will be fixed.

I have no idea why, but I've yet to see one single report of doors opening in Europe.

Keyless access not locking or opening the door, yes, but not one report of doors opening during drive. And I am in the Volkswagen ID. Drivers club, and boy, are there complaints. Mostly about 3.0 OTA not being delivered, but that's another story (everyone already got the 12V and 2.4, and 3.0 rollout did start).

If it was US 2023, I'd point my finger at the US plant, but as it is German-built cars, I have no guesses why it shows up in the US only. Then again the software issue with 360' cameras only affected US cars too...

I'm just going to rely on the issue not popping up for a year or two, and VW having their shit in order before it does.
I’m still waiting with no ETA. I can’t take my dogs in the rental car. I’m thinking I’ll do the recall process if it goes over 30 days. I’ve only owned the car for eight weeks and it’s been broken for three. I’m definitely not attached to it. I’m sorry it’s happening to everyone. It was my bucket list fancy car. So disappointing.

Ok yeah I don't think anyone reported it for Europe. Could just be a different supplier for this part in US.

You mean the part would be different for cars imported to US? My under was that it's happening on cars manufactured in Germany as well, not just Tennessee built.

I thought I saw most are with 2023 MY.

A replacement car?
A replacement car?
Nope, my first EV. Been a long 14 months to wait.

At least 1 poster with this issue was in Great Britain.
I think the reason you don’t see a lot of posts about this from Europe is that the supply chain there has parts available for the repairs, so no frustrated users waiting weeks and months for a part with no ETA.

Mine is a 2021, so built in Germany. That’s interesting about the lack of complaints in Europe, though. 🤔
