Came across this thread and wanted to report that my front passenger door has started opening randomly while driving. It's happened 3 or 4 times in the past two days while driving sometimes over 40 mph. It's pretty scary because the door actually opens enough that you can hear the wind rushing by and the open door light on the dash goes on and the warning beep starts. Really annoying because you can't just reach over and close the door while driving...had to pull over and close the door each time. One note is that it's been raining pretty hard here in Southern California not sure if that has anything to do with it. Anyone have this resolved? FYI mine is a 2023 AWD.

Yup and I got a call today from advisor, they asked me about whether it was raining or car was washed as well because they have another car in their shop with the same issue. Likely bad seal and water damage caused this, but waiting for confirmation.

I got a call today, they first ordered a door latch mechanism, they replaced that cleared some codes but not all, now they just ordered a door sensor. He could only find one in the parts network, that was in California, I’m in New York, so is going to take a few days yo get in. Will up date you all soon.

Did your door release when it was raining? I was asked specifically if that occurred during rain.

I've gotten exactly this reaction when I've raised issues. And I've seen this reaction to others when they've raised issues. But I 100% agree with your view.

Here are some ID.4 things that require lengthy explanations but shouldn't:
  • Locking and unlocking the doors.
  • Unlatching the doors.
  • Operating the child safety locks.
  • Operating the dome light (cabin interior lighting).
  • Basic operation of the headlights and parking lights.
  • Operating the High beams.
  • Unplugging the J1772 charging connector.
  • Turning the radio on and off.
  • And doubtless others…
We took an AWD ID.4 for test drive, the radio was playing and we could not figure out how to turn off radio, so we just turned sound all the way down. That made navigation voice silent, so to just hear navigation we turned audio back up and endured the radio. When we got back to the dealership we asked the salesman to show us how to turn off the radio and he could not figure it out. He just kept going into audio options and telling us what those options did (volume, fader etc). He gave up and said "you can just go on YouTube and I'm sure somebody has made a video on how you control the radio". Shows both how complex the car is and how gifted and informed the sales people are.

Quick update with all issues experienced:
  • Both interior AND exterior handles electronic mechanism for door opening sometimes work and other times don't or has delayed response
  • Random clicking sound from the opening motor when no actions are done with the door
  • Door may randomly crack open slightly when the car is parked
  • Door may randomly open while at the stop light, putting the car into Park
  • Driver side door cannot be locked from inside or outside
  • The inside door lock button does not always lock doors
  • Door may randomly swing open when someone is driving in the car
  • Random notifications in the mobile app that the door is opened when no one is opening the doors or near the car. (Could be several notifications within a few seconds)
  • Charging plug gets locked even when the car was done charging and set to release connector
While this is bumped, I'd like to say that this list describes my experience exactly (except I think the last 2, though I have notifications off). Today, my door popped itself open during a right turn from a stop sign, which was a first. Thankfully, I was finally able to reach the scheduler at my dealer's service dept. (after their online portal not working, me leaving a voicemail, using their "contact us" form and telling the salesperson who responded to forward my message...) It turns out I still have to wait 10 days just to drop the car off (and insist on a loaner) for a diagnostic appointment. I worry that I'm going to end up needing to tell them how y'all's mechanics solved the problem.

If you have notifications off then you won't get it but you can check the status of the door in the app. Mine stays in open state most of the time. Last point is speculation that door opening during the charging overnight may result in locked charging port in the morning but they need to fix the main issue then I can verify that.

I am hoping to hear something more from my service advisor tomorrow. They have been actively investigating this issue on two id.4s today.

There's an old software joke:

If architects designed buildings the way software engineers design software, the first woodpecker to come along would destroy half of civilization.

I'm reminded of this joke more and more as we discover all the real-world things that seem to pose challenges to the design of the ID.4.

There are actually separate volume settings for the “Audio” (radio, etc.) and the announcements, but it's easy to accidentally turn down the volume of the announcements when you were only trying to affect the radio: just start adjusting the volume at the same time that the car starts an announcement. Then you'll be digging through the menus to turn the announcement volume back up again.

So, I'm afraid there's no way for me to explain this that won't make you and the dealer feel a little silly... to stop the radio playing, just tap the "power" button under the infotainment screen. I have circled it in red here, but if it's hard to see, it's like a computer power icon - a circle with a line through the top of it. It also restarts the music if you want to hear it again.

Also, if the audio is set to “Favorites” and is displaying the pop-from-the-right big per-channel display (that for the Radio shows the RDS data), there's an explicit “Mute” button (icon) shown on that screen. (I have no idea why other screens don't also have a mute button.)

There is another thread on the site which talks about the driver's door locking/unlocking while driving. Don't let the title of the following thread fool you. This is the same issue.

I took my car to the dealership last week to assess the problem. They need to replace the entire door handle to fix it. Apparently, tying the driver door opening to the activation of other circuits is not uncommon with VWs. The tech mentioned that fuel pumps in some ICE models only become active once the door has been opened. So, once the new handle is delivered, painted and installed I will also have the Travel Assist features back online.

After they ordered the door handle (it's coming from somewhere in the States), I was informed that this was the last driver door handle available in stock in North America. Driver door handles are now officially on back order. VW take note about this....there is obviously a weak link here.

For what it's worth, the unlocking is more of a nuisance than a safety issue for me. I've never had the door fully open while driving.

When did they order it for you? I was told it was on backorder with no eta on 12/29 when my car was in service for this issue, but I decided to keep the car since there were no loaner. On 1/11 I got loaner and same update on door handle replacement no eta.

The dealership ordered mine on January 6th....so it was closer to 2 weeks ago now.

It's being shipped to Canada from the States. I have no idea if there's a separate supplier for north of the border, or whether all of the continent gets parts from the place.

Yikes. I'd like to figure out why my lock sometimes does work. On my last drive, everything performed as expected. I even opened and shut the door a few times. Oddly enough, I heard the door squeak again a couple of times, and it had indeed rubbed a tiny bit more paint off the badging that runs across the door seam. The only crazy theory I have left is that the latch is misaligned by a sliver, and when it fails to secure, it freaks out. But idk, the door looks properly aligned and the badge that rubs is probably hand-placed with adhesive.

Out of curiosity, I found and read the technical repair manual, but it didn't have details about the lock mechanism, beyond how to replace it. There is a bolt that sticks out of the door (covered by a black rubber cap, which I had first assumed was a sensor.) It's used to release something during repair (by turning then pushing) so I don't love that mine seems to have some noticeable, though probably normal, play to its position. Oh well, this is probably nonsense, especially since the hand-powered functions almost always work, via those cables with a cool name that I read about in the manual.

Probably at this point you should take it to dealer to evaluate and order part which might be a while... At least for me

I have a "fun" problem which is unique to my car. Recently my driver door handle died. The emergency release works, but electronic part is not working. I have taken the car to the service a week ago to diagnose for this problem and now just waiting for the handle part to come in. Since I wasn't given an estimate when the part may arrive I decided to keep driving the car. Opening the door is a bit of hassle and driver door cannot be locked anymore, but this isn't as bad of an issue as the door may randomly open during the drive. It wouldn't be so much of an issue if it opened slightly but stay latched, but it can actually swing open if it happens during the turn so I keep my hand ready on the handle. So, yes, it will be eventually fixed, but I am really concerned with these electronic doors, the behavior of the faulty electronic mechanism and their longevity.
We have a 2021 Pro S having the same issue. It has had door latch problems from the beginning, but recently the passenger door can literally swing open during driving. I have the feeling that the dealership doesn't believe us. They plan to replace some door latch parts again. At this point we are so frustrated we could cry.
