I ordered the ID4 AWD pro and as per the website the order will be delivered to the VW Princeton dealership. I spoke to a sales guy at the dealership and he told me that the total price would

MRSP $43,000 + Destination Fee $1,100 + Dealer, Title, Registration Fees $1,500.

I am guessing that the MSRP and Destination fees should be the same at any dealership and the Dealer Fee seems high. What are you seeing? If the dealer is gouging me then can I change my dealer ship to another dealer? If so, recommendations would be nice!!

Thanks

The dealer fee is high. My dealer fee was $500, but I got them to wave it. I still had to pay title and registration.

I got a RWD 2 1/2 months ago -- paid MSRP plus destination. The dealer's "doc" fees were $200 on top of that which is what this dealer dings you for no matter what model car you buy. Your dealer's $1,500 fee is outrageous. I would have walked.

I'd agree, get the breakdown. Better yet go to your state's relevant website and find the fees yourself. For me (with an RWD Pro S) it was about $65 title/wheelage/etc, $658 registration tax, and doc fee of $125 (that's the cap in my state, many states don't have a cap on doc fee).

Does that $1500 include any sort of sales tax as part of that number? That is the big variable between states. I had to pay 8.4% sales tax, however, there was a WA state EV incentive where the first $25k of the purchase price was tax exempt, so I just had to pay tax on roughly $17k.

They havent shipped my vehicle yet. Is it possible to just change delivery to a different dealer then?
Call VW customer care, they might be able to change it. Often the other dealers in an area charge similar fees so try to check that. Dealers make that hard to check.

What state/ county is this. We can't answer this without that info.

I bought a Pro for MSRP. It included the Auto Dimming mirror with Home Link for $325 and the Monster Mats & accessories for $235. Total MSRP including the destination fee was $41,750. The dealer Documentation fee was $425 and for a cash sale, that's way too high - Usually you can get them to come off that figure by 50% or so, but not when you're buying something as scarce as an ID.4. Mississippi sales tax was $2,108.75 and then I got a $500 military discount - That's from VW, so you should get it at any dealer if you have the credentials. They needed a copy of my DD-214. Final, out the door price for the $39,995 Pro was . . . . $43,793.75 - Would've been over $44K without the discount

If my numbers are right, $311 4yr registration fee

See https://www.state.nj.us/mvc/regfee/bwstep4.html?

Title 60 to 85 (if lienholder)

See https://www.google.com/url?q=https:...4QFnoECAsQBQ&usg=AOvVaw3o2UiyiIVLHcj78Zxec42F

So if my numbers are right, $1100 dealer fee.

FYI I just paid a little over that to have my car shipped in a covered carrier across the country. I'm telling you this in case you want to choose another dealer with state limits on dealer doc fees. I can only assume that a short distance covered truck fee to transport your auto would be less, like from DE or NY.

Also, depending on your feeling towards travel, you could make a vacation out of it. CA for example has doc fees limited to $85!!! Fly out for $100, break in the car on a bad ass cross country road trip with free "gas" from Electrify America, and pocket the 1015.00 savings.... or just blow it all on in and out burger/ Vegas on your way back! FYI I almost went with a Cali car myself. Dealer wanted M S RP + doc and that's it, no other fees. You just register your car yourself when you get back and yes they give you temporary tags.

You may even be able to negotiate add ons too.

"If I choose you as my delivery dealer would you add on protection package for free, roof cross bars, homelink mirror, etc."

Whichever dealer you choose will make easy money. Ball is in your court. Just demand it in writing. Talk means nothing. And if they say trust us, blame it on a spouse if you are not confrontational by nature "I believe you, but he/she is crazy and if I don't get it in writing Ill be on the couch, lol lol right?" If they won't put it on writing, it's a lie. Know this and good luck!

Thank you Daikon. The dealer mentioned both a "delivery fee" of $1100 which he said is charged by VW and then a $1500 "Dealer" fee. I get it that this guy is overcharging me on the dealer fee. But is the delivery fee standard?

Thank you guys. I shopped around and found another dealer ship that is ready to do the Title/Reg+Dealer fees for $800 - doc fee $400 + reg $400. It is still high but half off the ridiculous price quoted to me by the first dealer.

I called up the VW Customer service center and they told me they cannot change my destination dealership. I am now stuck with this $1500 dealer tag on fees it seems. It is very disappointing

That's terrible!

This is a reason people like Tesla- the price is the price model.

Did you choose that dealer or did they assign?

Either way, inventory is coming in, just cancel it and pay LESS somewhere else.

Look at doc fee limits by state and try to get one from a state with a nice limit, like CA (85.00 and tons of inventory at msrp or less).

You are buying new, so the car will be the car, will be the car no matter where you get it. The only difference will be add ons and price. That should make shipping for a replacement easier.

And since can cancel whenever, you can look and make sure you can lock in your backup before you cancel.

FYI - it was cheaper for me to purchase the same car across the country and have it shipped in then it was too by locally!

Also, if the dealer you found with the cheaper fees was local, make sure you leave a review.

People should know that a dealer will hit them with ridiculous fees at the finance counter before they shop, not when they are getting ready to pay. And they should especially know that the dealer down the road won't do that! If your review makes a big enough dent in sales, maybe they will change their ways.

That is what made me walk from the last dealer btw. Agreed on a price and then sat down with a check in hand ready to drive home with the car. Then I an given a higher price + fees that were undisclosed including non negotiable dealer installed options. Dealers that pull this deserve bad reviews.

Good luck!

Here's a summary of states doc fee limits. Can't vouch for it because my state, California, is off by $5, but it's informative and a good place to start.
