Had an interesting experience yesterday i thought i would share with the group. Finished charging at EA charger and put charge cable back and forgot to go back and close the charge port door. Drove away without realizing i left door open. Eventually i realized the noise from plastic cap banging around and stopped on side of road and got out to close. I came from chevy bolt and it had warning on display if door was open. No such message on id4. Surprised there is no warning about door being open when driving. Kind of like leaving cap off when refueling. Wonder if VW should fix or if warning is not working?

I’ve done this too, maybe not driven quite as far as you. I don’t believe there’s a sensor in the charge door, so it’ll be manual all the way.
In my opinion the charge door is one of the weak spots (pun intended) on the ID4 and needs updating in future years. It’s a weak, brittle part, overly large, and not high quality.

Not exactly the same as leaving the cap off in an ICE vehicle, which will cause a check engine light based on vapor emissions.

My Audi TTS had the cap-less self sealing design and I forgot to close the door on a few occasions with no CEL and no door alert. In fact I don't think I've ever had an ICE vehicle which alerted me to a fuel door open.

But given a high voltage electric socket it would be nice to know if the door is left open. "Simple" as adding a microswitch and annunciating on the display. Good "like to see" item.

My Kona would give a warning if I were to leave the door open. I am surprised that there is nothing on the ID.4.

Did the same thing after my very first charge at an EA station a couple days ago. I guess I was more focused on the EA station and app, also because the charge port is on the passenger side it's not on the way back to the driver door.

Only got a couple blocks away before noticing that thing sticking out in the side mirror.

I've never understood why VAG has the fuel door on the [USA/Germany] passenger side, other than easier to get out of the vehicle with the "pump" on that side. If it were on driver's side it would most always be obvious that it was left open.

Pretty obvious that VW just followed the Tiguan locale on the ID.4 rather than design a better imho front-center location.

I saw the Munro video on VW battery and saw that all the inlet and outlet from the battery pack is one side and i am sure its on the side nearest to the rear motor. So a backside location provides the path with the shortest length to the battery. I am just theorizing here.

But the 12V battery as well as some orange cable high voltage terminations are in the "frunk" so .... ;)

It is what it is at this point and not likely to change anytime soon. 🤷‍♂️

Have done this quite a number of times on the e-Golf I had before the ID.4. The charge port door used to shut itself upon reaching 15mph.
But the DC charging cap is another matter. No way but manual :)

My i3 won't let me budge with the charge door open. I figure it's a failsafe to driving off with a leash connected to the car, and let's face it, unlike a gasoline hose with a detachable coupling, playing tug-of-war using a charging cord is going to do some damage.

Thankfully, ID.4 won't let you go if you're 'hooked up', so to speak. Don't ask me how I know.
I think this is true of basically every EV, can't move when plugged in. I'm happy it lets you drive with the charge door open, that thing seems a bit flimsy and I'd hate to get stuck somewhere just because I bumped and damaged it.

A warning in the infotainment would be nice though.
