Had family in town and decided to take them up mount Evans here in Colorado. One way from my house in Golden is about 52 miles and 8000 ft of gain. We started with 70% and made it to the top with 24% (this was also with 5 adults in the vehicle). A little scary seeing something like 25 miles remaining but of course knew it would be fine. On the first major descent into Idaho springs we made it up to 37%, and then with some more driving down i70 ended with 32%. Averaged 3.7mi/kWh on the drive which is also my long term average.

I would have been nervous that I would have had to turn around before reach the top.

I have been up there twice on vacation as a kid. The first time it was a nice day with good views and we stopped by the visitor center. The next time, the visibility was poor and the road had deteriorated substantially. We passed a skateboarder going down in the rain while on the way up. When we go to the top, the visitor center had burned down. Looking online, the visitor center must have burned down in 1979, so I was there before and after that year. I want to visit there again.

Didn’t know there was ever a visitor center up there. Some parts of the road are in rough shape but it’s not a bad drive. We go up about once a year with out of town visitors and once or twice for recreation.

From what I can see, it was called the Crest House and was a souvenir shop and restaurant. It looks like it might be called a welcome center now and is more just some walls without a roof. It was a long time ago too, so my memory may not be too clear.

Looks like the best time to go is in the late afternoon or evening. Were you the only ones there at that time?
This year they implemented a permit system for mid-day hours, but I would still agree evening is best. No permit required after 6pm. There were a few other people up there but very different than it would have been earlier in the day.
(y) The 'woke' door handles add a special touch to the image.
Yeah my wife loves those and she likes to hide behind the car for photos to activate them. They are a cool feature. Very happy with the feature set on the pro model.

That was the one that raced up pikes right? Pretty cool. No donuts at the top of mt Evans but I would say a better view than pikes. Typically mountain goats although none this past visit.
