Do any of you have issues sometimes opening the doors from the inside? I'll pull the door latch all the way and push on the door itself and it doesn't open. The remedy is to pull the latch 2-3 more times until it "catches" and then it will open. Doesn't happen with every use, but maybe 1/3 of the time or so.

Taking the car in for a 10k review by the dealer as required by vw and want to call this out if it is abnormal (my experience so far is that there are a few things they don't work right that they can't won't or don't know how to fix).

Pull the latch slightly as you then push the door outward with your elbow. Some folks have had issues but once you get it you're all set (my wife and I have never had an issue so I guess designed for our elder ergonomics?). Kinda like the foot placement and step back with the rear hatch opening. A number of these nuances with this vehicle.

Others have reported similar issues (search) and often it was blamed on "user error." however after I received my vehicle, the doors are easy to open from inside (like so easy you can pull however you want and door will pop open) and open reliably on first pull, so I would bring your issues to dealer attention as I now suspect there may have been a defective batch of actuators or some maladjustment from the factory

This is how it's designed, a slight pull triggers the electronic unlock, while a harder pull engages the mechanical latches - but then you need to pull twice. Here's what the manual says:

Opening doors from inside
Pull the door release lever only slightly. Do not pull the door release lever beyond the resistance.

NOTICE
People who are locked in the vehicle can unlock the doors in an emergency by pulling the door release lever forcefully twice. The lever must be pulled beyond a noticeable resistance in this case.

I'm not quite sure what the reasoning is behind this design - only thing I can think of is it prevents the doors from opening when the car is moving, unless you really, really mean it. Like it or not, you get accustomed to it.

I noticed this quirk with all of the doors on the ID.4, but thought it was just a quirk not a defect (maybe it is a defect?). Basically what I do to always successfully open them from inside is to do a gentle push out (with an elbow or with the other hand) before pulling the latch (until you hear the electronic unlock). If I don't do the push, the door ends up in a midway open state (loose but still latched), like when you don't close the door fully. Maybe it is a defect, or it is intentional (so the door dont fly open when someone accidentally pulled the latch or when little kids do it).

Here is how my recent build functions

By all accounts, earlier builds may not have this very normal functioning. May have been a rolling silent hardware change at Zwickau or they realized something was maladjusted on earlier builds
Thats not fair! Mine does not do that (build 3/21). I don't mind it but passengers who don't know my "special method" often have problem opening the door. It is basically the same way to my method except that your door "springs" open by itself. There may be some sort of a "spring mechanism" in the way of the suppleness of the rubber door seals or by an actual spring somewhere, I don't know for sure, but in a sense over time this may degrade / lose effect and in the end you'll have to push the door like I do, enjoy while it lasts 😁

I believe the actuator that is supposed to push the door out is a little weak. My Feb build works as shown in the video when level, most of the time. It definitely fails as soon as the door opens slightly "uphill" and needs elbow help to open on the first try. Like @Huey52 I use my elbow all the time, out of habit and to be sure.

Wonder if dealership can do a fix to change the early builds? That is how my Tesla behaves since 2016, has not "degraded"...

Weak or simply programmed to move only 2mm vs 10mm in the video or so? Am seriously wondering if this could be fixed with a firmware upgrade to the door modules

I just tested all my doors and yes they all only halfway-open when I pull the latch without pushing, even level. The doors seem to "stick" and or "resist" a bit, perhaps either sticky rubber seals, or tight / dry hinges. In the video, it looks like door opening is so effortless. So then it could be different hinge design / grease or something. Ugh not looking forward to another dealership visit...

I've had this problem as well. Dealer adjusted it a little and it seemed better, but has returned sometimes. Reading the comments I wonder if this is an encouragement for 'Dutch reach' to open the door by first giving a slight pull inwards? Will try this next time.

Yes. We have to pull the door latch twice at times to get it to open. Would love an explanation and solution.

The problem is some of our doors do not spring open as easily / sticky. If you watch the video, the door springs open so easily, ours do not. The reason you need to pull latch twice, is because the first unlatching the door doesn't open quick enough that the actuator relocked in a half-way open state, requiring a second pull for a full release. If you push the door out while pulling the latch, it'll open the first time. Not saying we should accept it like this, maybe dealership can adjust the doors somehow, or replace parts.

I have the same problem. I slightly push out on the door first with my elbow, then I pull the latch open....works every time! VW needs to fix this.
