Others have reported this happening when the little locking pin in the charge port can't protrude. There may be enough slop in tolerances to allow the pin to not make it out. It occurs to me that if you plug in the charging handle while pressing the button and keep holding the button down, it could prevent the pin from coming out and cause that message. As @Joe_U698745 suggested, try reseating it and see if that makes a difference.

I am having the same problem. It just started today. I have tried "Andy at Ross-Tech's" suggestion to no avail.
I'm also having other intermittent electrical problems, intermittent but annoying. These bugs showed up after the first 1400 miles.

Just got a warning this morning that “emergency charging only”. Level 2 charger only giving 2 mph.
I am a new VW ID.4 owner. I got the same error message using the Level 1 charger at home.

After much surfing online, I was able to fix the issue by using my CarNet app with a minor setting change (see attached images):

In the CarNet app under "Dashboard", click on "Manage Battery Settings". On the next screen, you have to change the "Charge Current" from "Max" to "Reduced". This should clear the error message. [It will need to be changed back to "Max" when using a public charger].

If you get this error message on the car pane (cockpit) as I did, the charging port on the side of the car will also be flashing between red and green vs. the normal green blinking (another way the car tells you something is not right).

Hopefully, this helps!

I know about max and reduced charge. That can be adjusted on the Infotainment screen w/o involving CarNet. What I wrote about is an actual fault in the system. VW mechanic determined that the charging plug sometimes was not locked into the port -- an intermittent mechanical failure. A part was sent for and has now arrived at the dealership. When that's installed I hope at least that bug is fixed.

I’m having the same issue. Was the replacement part successful? If so, do you mind sharing what the issue was so I can help guide my techs? I’ve already brought it in several times but seem to do nothing when they can’t recreate it. It’s now happening consistently so hoping this helps my case lol

Do you press in on the plug and wiggle it sideways while pressing as hard as you can? This error will occur if you are weak at pressing in the handle as my wife was the first few charges, or if anything is in there preventing the plug from going fully in. I usually watch the shoulder of the plug to be sure its hitting into the socket on the side.

I’ve been having this problem since April. I have manipulated the plug, adjusted various controls on VW app, and tried different chargers. It’s gone from occurring every few weeks to daily. I take it in tomorrow so hopefully will finally get the verdict on if it’s mechanical or user error but really thinking it’s the former.

If you look with a bright light you can see the little pin that pops out on top (it locks the handle to the car), and if the handle is not fully pressed in or something is wrong with your EVSE plug, that little pin will not be able to pop out. It could be something wrong with that little pin. Can you take your EVSE to the dealer with you? They may be able to see if the plug is the problem.

Just update: They concluded it was a faulty charging lock and socket. “Fault P1CF400: charge socket A, charge connector lock blocked.” Both were replaced. Got it back today and no issues 😎
I just picked up my car yesterday and having the same issues as well. How long was your car at the dealer and did they have the replacement parts in stock?
