We ordered an ID4 Family plus some options in April for July delivery. This was then delayed and the car should be made this week. But I have seen news of more parts shortages and reduced production, so I am kind of expecting the worst.

We had to pay 20% up front, so VW have been sitting on over 10K EUR from us for 4 months, and although I understand there are chip shortages and it's not their fault, the customer service hasn't really been great in dealing with it, or keeping us informed. We end up having to chase the salesperson for days until they respond with an update.

Our feeling is if we're told the car didn't get produced this week, we're not really happy to be given yet another new date for production that quite probably also won't be met, and would prefer to just cancel and maybe look at alternatives, or possibly stick with our current car and order an improved ID4 in a couple of years when their supply issues are sorted and some of the small annoyances with the car have been fixed.

Has anyone cancelled in the EU? Was it easy, or did they make it difficult or flat out refuse?

20% up front is a huge amount. I'm surprised they got any orders at all.

Agreed. Seems like a lot to commit for a long period of time, to a car you haven't driven.
Is that a norm in Europe?
We had an ID4 provided for two days back in April, so we had driven it a fair amount and based our purchase on that. We liked the car very much. We felt VW was a big established company so didn't really perceive any risk in making a deposit like this. This was our first new car order from a manufacturer, so we didn't have any other experience to compare it against but I assumed this was normal.

The pre-sales was very good. Hoping very much if we do get the car after all that we don't have any problems with it, because I am not really very impressed with VW's customer service once we'd paid the deposit and I think getting any help from them is really going to be a constant battle.

Good news, we've been told by our salesperson that week 35 (this week) production of our car is confirmed. That seems surprising if the reports of Zwicklau closing down for a few days are true, but I am happy to take it. I assume if they are telling that to us now, it should arrive later this month.

Ordered at the end of June. My build week 44 has been canceled so more than likely 2022 with no build week at this time.

A lot here doesn't seem right!

I ordered mine in July for December delivery. I haven't chased the dealer for an update I'll make contact sometime in November. I expect delivery will be pushed back until January at least. VW UK have never quoted lead times less than 5 months.

I put £1k down, which seemed to be a bit high (I'm used to putting £500 down when ordering similarly priced cars), The rest is due when the car is actually delivered. (Normally paid on debit card when sat in the dealership collecting the car).

Anyway up until you take delivery you can pull out at any time and get a full refund. Even after you take delivery you can pull out for whatever the statutory period is.

Is it it customary for you guys to have to put down deposits when you order new cars?

You have to put down something small when you place the order (usually a few hundred £). Basically showing you're serious. Even though you can drop out and get a full refund at any point.

The actual "downpayment" if financing, or the full balance if buying outright isn't due until you collect the car. Otherwise the dealership is sat on a whole heap of your money and you have nothing!

OK, same as here then, bar the deposit - I was under the impression you had to put down an exorbitant deposit based on previous comments in this thread - glad to hear that is not case.

In the USA we place orders for $100. We then lock in for $500. All are fully refundable if we decide to cancel, even if the car is delivered to the dealer.

Seems like the OP put down a MASSIVE deposit. I commented to say that just isn't right!

I put €1000 down but it will be refunded to me. I'm in Ireland. I will admit it hasn't been like buying other Volkswagens in the past. Information is very vague at the moment. I think the dealers are unsure themselves when cars will be delivered. I think ID4 orders have been out the door.
