Front Brake Size

I have seen it reported that the AWD was getting bigger front brakes than the RWD, but when I look at the specific options list for my VIN (FE RWD) it shows the front brake PR number is "1LN". In the factory manual it shows the following:

2388

And then in the section specific to the 1LN brakes:

2389

If anyone who has their FE already has a chance to look at the options sticker (in the rear storage compartment I think) and see if there is a 1LC (358mm rotor) or a 1LB (or 1LF) (330mm rotor) I would appreciate it. I am wondering if the US models all got the bigger brakes.

In the U.S. only the 1st Edition and the AWD models are available with the factory tow hitch. I wonder if that’s because the 1st Edition has larger front brakes than the RWD Pro and Pro S models? There’s a leaked dealer spec sheet floating around somewhere that lists technical things like the brake size. I seem to recall the AWD models have 14.1” front rotors and the RWD front rotors are smaller than that.

1st edition RWD and 1LN here. Tried to get a measurement here:

Here's what the US press release has about brakes:

2390

...and here's the accompanying spec sheet (1st column is Pro RWD, 2nd column is Pro S & 1st Edition RWD):

2391

358mm is 14.1inches, so it looks like your vehicle has the "wrong" brakes. Good for you! I wonder how many other 1st Editions have the bigger brakes...

It’s funny, Partslink24 shows for my VIN:

Thanks everyone for the data. Looks like US FE's have the bigger brakes and Andy's measurement of 14" proves it along with the "1LN" RPO code on his build sticker. And the partslink24 data shows the same for a FE VIN. The 1LN ones are also 7mm thicker than the smaller ones and those numbers match. The smaller ones are are 13" and it has to be because of the hitch and towing.

Smaller disks are for 52kwh battery and these are RWD only. Will these even hit the USA?

In the picture, is the tape measure hanging almost .75” below the bottom of the disc?
No the tape is resting on the rotor hub and 1.5" off the face, and the camera is aligned with the top of the rotor.

Right, it was hard to get it lined up properly and take the pic with one hand. I can try to get better measurements later but it's about 14".

I think everything lines up for the 358mm brakes. All of the documentation says that and the picture confirms it. Did you notice if they were dual piston or not? The manual says a single 60mm piston, but the name of the caliper implies a dual. And in the video Bjorn took under a European model it looked like the fronts were dual pistons.

Not that any of this really matters, they are what they are! But the technical details always fascinate me.
I believe they are dual piston, in terms of having two pistons on one side:

Dunno how well that pic shows it but there seem to be 2 pistons on the inside that push against a fixed fork shaped assembly on the outside. This is unlike what I would consider to be real 2 piston brakes where there is a piston on each side.

Thanks for the picture! There is an error in the service manual then. The parts diagram shows one single 60mm piston (for both the large and small brakes) while the caliper name implies 2 46mm pistons on the inside, and Andy's picture shows 2 pistons. Here is the parts diagram in the service manual for the large brakes:

Yes, when they start to be produced at the Tennessee plant in the US, end of 2022.

John, can you please remind me what site you are using to looking options list per VIN where is lists PR numbers? I just came across this thread today and want to confirm what's listed on my vehicle. Thanks.

It was when I had the day pass to erWin and part of the $35 day pass. There is a field to type in your VIN and get the options listed out. Here is mine, which should be the same for every US FE out there except for the color...unless you have blue then it will be the same!

Great. Thank you, as always. I'm still surprised that 1st Editions have the larger brake rotors given what was stated in all the 1st Edition media reviews where the brakes were mentioned.

I also finally found my label in the rear storage compartment too.

I have specs for my ID.4 Pro S and it also shows 1LN brakes (larger size). I wonder what will actually arrive on vehicle in a few weeks.

Maybe larger front rotors are on all models with 83KW battery due to heavier weight?

All brakes in the US are the same regardless of drivetrain or trim level. Big 14.1" front rotors.
