My wife called me this morning on her way to work and informed me that the center screen froze. I told her to pull over in a safe spot and restart the car. When she restarted the screen was blank. I asked her to try it again, this time get out and lock the car. Same result. She continued to work and tried restarting when she arrived. Nothing again. At lunchtime she tried again and this time everything was normal. On her ride home everything was still normal. When she first called, I made an appointment with the service department for tomorrow. I'll keep the appointment and update here tomorrow. The car has 1375 miles on it.

I had something similar happen. I was in Apple CarPlay at the time, using Maps. Just froze on the main infotainment screen, and nothing would cause it to reset. Interestingly, navigation continued to operate on the steering wheel display. Any similarities?

She does use carplay. I'll mention that to the dealer tomorrow.

First thing you should try in such situations is holding down the infotainment power button for 10+ seconds, in most cases that seems to resolve infotainment freezes/black screens, and you can do that while driving so no need to pull over and fiddle with trying to restart the whole car.

In case that doesn't work though, I think I've read some people say to try holding down the ignition button for 10+ seconds instead (with car parked), and that might restart the entire car computer, not just infotainment.

Apple CarPlay has been screen-freeze culpable in many Audi's since its 2017 availability.

Yes, "cold rebooting" the system can help. Cars these days are rolling computers and in such cases unfortunately often need to be treated as such.

One of the difficulties of course is CarPlay code aligning with an ever migrating iOS. Case in point for my EA App woes until just recently.

Dealer found no codes or problems. I mentioned holding down the infotainment button or the ignition button and the service writer had no knowledge of that but he said it couldn't hurt.

Thanks for the info. If this happens again I'll try that.

I had slightly different problem. My screen seemed upside down and really fuzzy. Like some of you, I had apple carplay on. I did not try the infortaintment button. But 1 hr after power off, the next restarting the car, everything was normal.

I had a similar problem once when I was going back and forth between native navigation and AA. As I recall, AA was just sort of stuck, and I couldn't get it to work again. I came back later and it was fine again.

Cause and Fix for center screen. I had my center screen fail. No display. I stopped the car shut it off, removed the corresponding fuse in the fuse box which is inside the car at the lower left dash. Waited 10 seconds reinstalled it and it fixed the problem. I think I know what caused the problem. I had gotten in and out of the car several times prior to leaving, I believe that it had automatically “turned on and off” several times while I was doing this. Sorta like turning your computer on and off several times without it ever getting to fully start. Then when I did leave I just jumped in and put it in reverse without making sure that the center screen had fully loaded. Since this has happened I make sure that I let the car “start” before I back out of the garage. No more problems.

Did you try just holding down the infotainment power button for 10-20 seconds first, before resetting with the fuse?

Yes I did. And I measured the seconds to make sure I didn’t get impatient. I thought that would work. I also tried turning the car off waiting 10 seconds and restarting. I have no idea why it didn’t reset by doing that. To be more precise during the failure. the screen was blank but the radio did start playing and the heater was operating.

Interesting. Haven't seen many occurrences of infotainment glitches they didn't get solved by just doing the power button reset. Thanks for reporting it

I'm having similar issues. On 3 occasions, it seems like the screen hung on start-up. Turning the car on & off didn't work, holding the "ignition" button for 10 sec didn't work. Turning the car off for maybe 10 minutes does. pushing the on/off on the screen only turned off the audio, but I'll try holding it down longer next time.
The screen seems to be getting power - slight glow - like a tv without the cable box on. I can also tap on the screen and hear the audible beep, like it's working, just can see it. Can drive the car no problem, just can't see the navigation or any of the other screens.
I'm wondering if I put the car in reverse before the screen had fully booted up caused the problem?

That's the right course of action. The ignition button doesn't do anything. You'll need to press / hold that AV "button" for 10 seconds to initiate a reset. It works consistently.
