Gas prices

I was just watching the news and saw signs for gas at $4.39 a gallon someplace here in the US (probably CA or HI) this Memorial Day holiday.. I used to drive a BMW and had to buy at least 91 octane which was always 60 - 90 cents more a gallon than regular. Where I live in FL gas has gone up at least 50 cents a gallon since the beginning of the year and is now $2.79 for regular and $3.40 for 91 and rising. I would much rather pay the 0.12 per KwH that they charge here all day and all night .I am getting about 3 mi per KwH. I used to get about 25 mpg with my BMW so instead of paying $3.40 for 25 miles of fuel I now pay less than a dollar and charge at home. When I go to EA, I pay nothing!. Oh, did I mention my insurance also went down? There are a few software bugs etc we early adopters are beta testing for VW but overall life is good !

And skip the gas lines next time a pipeline gets hacked!
There is an EA charger about 20 minutes from me, and is the only one in my state at the moment (Minnesota). Regardless, the free fuel for 3 years is a huge deal. I suspect gas will only start getting more expensive over time as people switch to EVs. With the idea that the oil companies will miss the profits they normally see, and raise the cost of oil to keep the money rolling in. We will see.

That is not the reason gas prices are going up

I'm very curios to see what will happen when the battery warranty comes due if people who did 3 years of fast charging destroyed their batteries or if the modern battery tech will hold up to the abuse. From everything I've seen car companies are hedging their bets with the warranty and 70% is a worst case estimate but I doubt that considered the damage that 3 years of DC charging could do. I also wouldn't want to wait for the warranty while I have bad batteries for the replacement, I don't tend to keep cars more that 5-6 years. I also need to check the fine print to see if they have a clause pertaining to DC fast charging. They might have a clause that would negate the warranty since it would be pretty easy to track how often you used an EA charger.

I also giggle a bit when people have a panic over gas going up a quarter when it is still incredibly cheaper per gallon than beer, soda, water, coffee..... The same people that pay $7 for 16oz of Starbucks will cry about $3 for a gallon of gas.

Crazy! What is the cost of electricity like?
What’s gas? And why should I be concerned about the price of it?
😜

Might become important if you buy a gas-powered Generac generator to charge your car....

Nope, that is lump charcoal which I light using electricity.

Thanks PaulD. Yes gas in CA is nuts! In our neighbourhood in the Bay Area it is $4.79 for premium. It’s going to easily jump above $5 this summer and I expect things to quickly hit $6 over the next few years. We saw this trend a few years ago and jumped on the EV program. E-Golf first and now ID4. Loving it! It is the way to go 👍

I am plugged into a free level 2 charger at the mall. Charging at 22 miles per hour. I might decide to go see my first movie in 2 years.

I’m in Washington state, I’m seeing $3.79 for regular, I put premium in the motorbike so maybe $4.49 for premium fuel. I don’t miss those $55 tanks of gas every week.

When jokes become reality:

I have a Honda-engined 6800/8500 watt generator that I use for emergency power for my house and I decided to run it today to blow out the cobwebs and keep the gas fresh. Just for fun I tried plugging in the ID.4 using the included L1 charger and amazingly it worked.

A horribly inefficient way to power a vehicle.

Yeah, I told my wife the other day I had to get gas in our ID4 for the first time, she said, "What!!!". My response, "Yeah, propane for the grill".
