We a 2021 First addition, it’s been a great car with 23k miles. We had the moans and brains with software a year ago but everything has been great. our GPS now decided it can’t find us, it goes from time zone to time zone and eventually the GPS screen goes grey. As anyone else had this problem and is there quick fix without going to the dealer?

yes, have seen this. havent figured out what causes it. Had head unit replaced and it still does it occasionally. I think it has to do with cellphones connected (apple car play), but it is sometimes persistent even once you disconnect the phones. Feels like an RFI/EMI issue, but I'm just guessing.

2022 AWD Pro S Gradient here. Today, while driving east on US80 toward home the VW Nav app had us tooling along toward our house when, suddenly, it directed us to an off ramp and then an immediate return to the freeway.

We ignored the “detour” expecting to see a stalled vehicle under the overpass, but all lanes were clear. For it’s final act, it got wonky for the last 2 miles asking us to do a 180 and return to the freeway and go back where we came from.

I figured it was just reacting to the fact that we hit 15% before we got home and plugged in.

Is this just stock VW nav, or is it doing it under Android Auto / Car Play?
Sometimes both. There are complicating factors where the GPS signal from car is used by the phone apps when connected (sometimes), so it makes sense that both the built in nav and phone could behave similarly.

I have not heard of many people complaining about this, which makes me think is either related to being AWD (perhaps more RFI from front motor), or perhaps specific of the phones (I have iPhone 12's).

doesn't sound like the same issue.

My Subaru nav used to love telling us to get off a random exit on the Turnpike and back on the same exit. Did it every time… fix was trading it for an ID.4 ;-)

This has happened in our 2023. jumping time zones, saying we are near Alaska instead of Chicago. Happens on car gps nav and also when using iphone via wireless CarPlay. Had this a week and no change. CarPlay makes it look like off 500 ft to right or on frontage rd. VW nav screen crazy and shows Canada etc. Once it said we were in the Pacific Ocean. Everything I read points to bad gps chip in "head unit" whatever that is. Sounds like common problem that few understand. ID4 is brand new so this is quite disappointing. Didn't realize you couldn't just use iphone to "bypass" these problems. CarPlay for sure uses car gps and I say this based on observation. You can't "just use your phone' as far as CarPlay connection is concerned. If your phone works when you're not in the car then its the car. I cannot stress enough that this has nothing to do with clouds antennas bad phone apple verizon or anything other that VW hardware/software. We have pro S awd if that helps anyone but I suspect that is irrelevant. Need to take it in again. Haven't had it long enough to deal with.

That's exactly what I experienced on y 2021, and the head unit replacement didn't fix it. GPS chip may not be int he head unit, however. More likely in comms module.
