Handsfree calling thru iPhone?

5065 Views 16 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  dfox
Can a handsfree iPhone call be initiated thru the steering wheel talk button or the "Hello ID" command? I am currently making calls by clicking on the phone icon inside of Apple CarPlay.

Is there a voice activated way of doing this?

I don't know the answer to your question but I just use "Hey Siri" in the car.

Same for Android. I just say "OK Google" out loud and my phone does it.
Hold down the steering wheel voice control button, that will activate Google Assistant or Siri (whichever you have)

Thanks ExCivilian! Yes, with Siri activated on the iPhone, "Hey Siri" wakes her up and I can make a phone call. Didn't realize it was that simple, but that's great no button pushes!

Silly question, but how does one hang up a call? I tried the obvious - clicking on the steering wheel phone icon - but that doesn't seem to do it.

Steering wheel phone icon...? Do you mean the voice button?

AFAIK the only way is through the infotainment screen, either inside Android Auto/CarPlay or in VW's built in phone app/screen.

EDIT: I definitely do miss the dedicated hang-up button that my Bolt had, which also functioned as a mute/pause button!

Yes, I was imposing my wishes (steering wheel phone icon!). Past few cars have had this dedicated button, so I’m stumbling to hang up without one!

This strikes me as a perfect software fix. Push the phone button to answer a call, push it again to hang up or answer the call in waiting. Easy. Should we put that on the software request page?

The point is that there is no phone button on the wheel at all, just a voice assistant button. Does that button answer incoming calls if you press it?

Ahh, mis-read. Still, that would be a good software fix for answering and hanging up calls. On my Camry, I bounce between the touch screen and steering controls all the time, so I couldn't say I have a preference.

I'd have check but I do believe the voice activation button answers/hangs up calls. Otherwise, it's only the infotainment screen. I don't remember because I tend to just wait for the other person to hang up when I'm driving so it's been a few years since I've even bothered with the buttons on the steering wheel in any of my other VWs.

Hmmm, I'll have to try that out. In my Alltrack, there was a dedicated phone button; it would answer incoming calls, but not hang up (although I could navigate a menu in the binnacle screen to access a hang up option).
Just confirmed that incoming calls can be answered by pushing the “OK” button (not the “Talk” button) on the steering wheel.

Still trying to figure out how to hang up on a call from the steering wheel, if possible. For now, just pushing the end call button on the CarPlay screen.

I didn't have Android Auto active when I received a call today. Answer and decline buttons appeared on the screen, I selected answer. It turned out to be a spam call, but I couldn't hang it up, the phone icons were not on the screen. How do you hang up a call?
