Spoke with VW Sweden today, apparently this wasn't too bad a news. Both Park Assist and Light Staging System will be available via software update, no word if it will be a free upgrade or something you pay for, also no information on the possibility to upgrade the speaker system.
OK, I spoke to my dealer, who also spoke to the importer:
As you said, Monroud, all additional services like Park Assist will be provided OTA - just not right off the bat, as the new software will be tested on a small number of vehicles first (makes sense).
ONLY cars with a production date from week 51 and onwards, and which were ordered before 5 September/when the email went out to the dealers, will get the upgraded sound system - however, all affected vehicles will come with a general 1.5% price increase.
They could not explain why the prices online have not changed to reflect this and why someone, who ordered, say, 4 September would get the upgraded sound system at the same price point as us early reservation holders
Confusion abound at VW AG, it seems.
I have negotiated a deal on an upgraded sound system from the dealer - for now, they do not have an ID.4-specific plug & play system, but they will let me know, when they do.
On a sidenote, I had my third test drive today in city, on small, bendy roads, on gravel - and without the motion-sickness-prone family, so i could let it rip:
It is a quiet, refined beast with excellent acceleration, handling on all surfaces, and the standard sound system is FAR better than on our old Honda Civic from 2010 - that is no surprise, but the level of bass and quality of the sound was a positive surprise, nonetheless.
The UI is seamless, and I noticed zero lag in all menu sections.
