Through purely anecdotal evidence from comments seen in various ID.4 FB groups, there seems to be a trend that if you placed your reservation for an AWD ID.4 in the month of May, VW seems to have just completely ignored these.

I reserved a Moonstone AWD Pro S at the beginning of May, but I’m STILL sitting at step 1 and have not been asked for the additional $400 to lock in my order.

However, numerous people have reported getting the lock in your order emails that reserved their AWD vehicles months after me, at least one of which just reserved his earlier this month?!

These (US) reservations have been a mix of non-Gradient (like mine) and Gradient Pro Ses . Meanwhile it seems like those of us who ordered in May, have just gotten nothing but radio silence. 🙁

Is there anyone on here who reserved an AWD Pro S in the month of May AND has made it past Step 1 of the reservation process?

There is 1 member here who reserved in late May and already got it not just locked, but produced with a VIN:
It seems the process for this is very random, and not in date of reservation like VW keeps telling us. I have read about dealer allotments being a likely cause, but who knows. You think they at least would lock your order like many made after you. See this spreadsheet for info about many (now 119) reservations and how they are progressing:

I reserved a Pro S AWD on May 15, and am still at step 1. Today I reserved a Pro S Gradient AWD after seeing significant evidence that they are being given priority. I will order whichever one is offered first. I don’t really want to spend the extra $1500 for the Gradient, but if it gets me a car before the $7500 tax credit is phased out it will be money well spent.

I placed initial order February 19, 2021, and locked order with the extra $400 June 30, 2021. No progress since then.

Pro S AWD nongradient, Moonstone Gray.
I placed mine at the same time , give or take a day. And with the same specs. Try to reach out to your sales man. Mine said that mine will start production in November And should receive mine in December. Fingers cross!! Unless buy luck..February seems to be final point if any chance for receiving this year delivery.

Hi All,

I'm the user that @SunWizard mentioned placed my reservation in May and locked in June. SunWizard and I have gone back and forth speculating on how VW prioritizes production and it does seem a bit random. My dealer, who claims to not have any more information than I do about the car I've ordered and its progress has been relying on me to tell him what VIN and where I think the car is. At the moment, I'm hopeful that it is being offloaded at the Davisville port but I can't be certain. My dealer, also suggested that there may be some element of dealer allocations that play into the manufacturing priority. Not sure how true that is since I have no ability to see how many ID4s are ordered through any one dealer vs. how many have been delivered.

I would agree that it seems extremely odd for you to still be stuck at step 1 since I would have expected you to be able to lock and THEN they would decide where in the queue your car falls in production. Sorry I don't have any more info but since I had a timeline that aligned with your May order, I thought I'd chime in.

Good Luck!

I just locked the Gradient order that I reserved 8 days ago. Meanwhile, the non-Gradient reservation that I placed in May is still languishing. Both reservations are for the same color, delivered to the same state, etc.

This is beyond stupid. Why couldn't they have alerted me a long time ago that non-Gradient reservations will be filled after Gradient reservations? I would have switched earlier and saved time.

And also stupid is that the web site is claiming delivery in December 2021-January 2022, but the email says AWD vehicles will be delivered in 6-8 months from now. If they are as bad at building cars as they are at communicating with customers, I'm going to regret ever looking at a VW product.

Ordering Gradient package to jump the queue is something that has been discussed and has spotty/controversial support here. The behavior you mentioned has been observed by some and not observed by others, ie, they didn't get any status change as a result of switching their order to include gradient package. I agree, this seems silly but I'm wondering if this is also a matter of automakers having to ration chips so they allocate chips to their higher margin cars. In this example it would make business sense to deliver a gradient package sooner since the chip requirement is the same and they've sold you some upgraded options via the package?

I have no proof of any of this so take it all with a heavy grain of salt but as dumb as it may seem to us all who are waiting for our cars, it seems to make sense for an auto manufacturer to prioritize cars that are optioned out.

To the same dealer? I think finding a dealer with more allocations is the key to quicker production. Based on the fact that there are many AWD gradient orders (max. options and price) that were placed many months and up to a year ago that are still not in production.

As far as I’m concerned, I’ve only jumped the queue ahead of those who reserved before May 15 when I placed my original reservation. I apologize to those people!
I don't think you did anything wrong and you have no control over where you are in the queue. Was only trying to shed light on the gradient order seemingly being prioritized having been discussed and debated in other threads. Your experience would seem to fall into the bucket of higher trim getting prioritized but there are likely other inputs to the equation.

I ordered an AWD Pro S Gradient, in late May and locked in late June and am expecting my car next week. According to some, I jumped the queue. I don't think I did anything wrong but I understand the frustration.

Just got an email stating I can now order the non-Gradient Pro S AWD that I reserved May 15! Going to order it (rather not have the 21” wheels), but undecided as to whether I’m going to immediately cancel the Gradient I ordered two days ago, or leave the order in place for a while and see how things play out. Does anyone know if the time interval from order lock to car shipped is the same for Gradient and non-Gradient?

I received the lock in email for my (early May reservation) AWD Pro S (non-Gradient) on October 1st.

The email said allow 6-8 months for AWD, but the confirmation page when I locked it in showed Jan-Feb as estimate for delivery. So not sure when it’ll actually be coming, but glad I didn’t need to add the Gradient package.
