Have you had any out of warranty repairs?

As the mileage on my car approaches 30k, I am starting to worry about repair costs when I am finally out of the warranty period. What repairs have you done that you had to pay for and what was the cost? This thread will help many of us decide whether or not to trade in before our warranty runs out.

I would not worry about that. The absolute biggest cost is the battery and that decreases over time. 8/100k warranty on that. And second biggest cost is the motor which can fetch 2-3k and is warranted 48 months/50,000miles, third is HVAC.

After owning a 2017 Chevy Bolt with 300k miles and only changing the tires and coolant, then trading up to an ID.4. Worrying about repair costs should be the least of your concerns in these vehicles. Heat is the number #1 cause of premature failure of components, EVs can't produce anywhere near the heat of an ICE engine.

I think most here and a majority of ID.4s are still in warranty for the most part.

Thank you for your opinion, @AlastorX50, which is an observation that most of us share, but this thread is not about opinions. it is about actual issues that some of our members might have. It would be great if there aren't any out of pocket repairs posted in this thread, but my suspicions are that we might see a few.

Yes, most still are, however there are some very high mileage ID.4's out there so despite still being within the timespan entirely possible some have now required out of warranty work.

You got me. I had to look up and confirm the warranty mileage period is, in fact, 50K miles (wanted to make sure it wasn’t 30K - you didn’t say that I just wanted to check). I traded in my FE with 40K for a new ID4 and that was part of my consideration. It was a variable, but the timing of the trade-in (last December) turned out to be before the huge drop, so it worked out. Plus, my wife wanted the gray color and we had two dusk blues in the driveway already. So, she got the new one (gray) and I got hers (the non-FE dusk blue) since she knew I was getting the Ocean ONE soon.

Eventually, all the same things that you've had to get serviced for years in all your other cars will start to fail in your ID.4:
  • Struts/dampers
  • Suspension members
  • Wheel bearings
  • Brakes failing owing to corrosion
  • Electric window winders and their cable transmissions.
  • Seat heaters
  • Heated side mirrors
  • Chipped/worn/broken glass
On my cars, it's never really been the ICE or the transmission/transaxle that has cost me the repair money; it's everything else.

Someone on youtube (I forgot who that was) had 100K+ miles on their ID.4, if I'm not mistaken costs about $3500 (total?) after warranty to replace these:
  • Seat massager failure
  • Steering wheel (failed steering wheel touch controls)
  • Charging port (stuck charge door locks)
He replaced his own 12V battery which worked but with persistent error (because the battery did not get re-coded at the dealership).

Maybe... don't use the seat massager too much... garage your ID.4 to avoid freezing damage to charging door locks... as per steering wheel controls... I dunno, maybe be gentle with it? :ROFLMAO:

I'm at 35K I have a bit of similar worry but maybe I think about it again closer to 50K... or buy the extended warranty (from VW)? Or if you have 2021 lets sue them for software update woes whatnot and have them give us 100K warranty :sneaky:

My door handle had to be replaced. My car still has warranty so I did not have to pay it myself but the cost was something like 530€.
They don't have the parts yet so no recall fixes for me. With no loaners available I can't be missing work to leave it there.
Man, I feel for the rodent damage one!

I'm about to take it in for 30k service. I think I'm mostly adding up how many times per year I cross yet another 10k barrier, and wonder what I am going to have to pay. I mean, I want to keep the warranty happy, but we had about 25k the first year, so total four years to get to 100k?

There’s still so much unknown about long-term maintenance costs and battery longevity for these vehicles. Looks like with all those miles you’re piling up every year, you’ll help us all learn what’s in store.
