So I just flat out flew on I5 for about 100 miles on a trip back from Roseburg to Eugene Oregon.. Lots of hill climbing/descending.. lots of new asphalt as well. The Id.4 was a serious blast and I was driving in the 85+mph range effortlessly and a few time when no one was around blasted to 100.. where I felt the governor slow me down. I'm 47 and typically a boring speed limit driver but couldn't resist as this is my 1st weekend cruise.. bought this 1st edition last week. Anyway.. I don't plan on doing this often but are these made to do that sort of driving? I know it's more unsafe than cruising at 65 but are the cars designed to be doing it regularly like if you lived in Germany and cruised the Autobahn? The car felt absolutely solid/smooth and comfortable at those speeds.. My 2017 BMW X3 I probably only went over 90 a couple times in the 4 years I owned it and it definitely didn't feel comfortable driving that speed. And of course my old Honda's and Dodge rigs I've owned in the past woulda been flat out scary at those speeds.

Some good ID.4 RWD max performance track insights from Tanner Foust. Although he doesn't cite speed you can rest assured he was going all out. ;)
As we know there are no gears per se in the ID.4 so once the motor rpm is maxed out so is your top end speed. Think of it as a bike with only one gear and once your legs are pumping as fast as they can .. 🚲
In my long German vehicle experience (incl. driving on the Autobahn) they do test for that environment. The very aerodynamic and planted low center of gravity ID.4 is very stable at high speed. Some folks complain of no "frunk" but by having a short nose the wheels are moved well to the corners and as such a relatively long wheelbase which also aids high speed stability. It also has a relatively low CUV ground clearance which is better for high speed than a more lofted SUV.

I usually don't get concerned with speed on expensive German cars. This thing could probably do 100mph sustained all day long, as long as you've got the battery for it. It's got huge brakes, and a cooling system that should support the autobahn. :)

But those 'huge brakes' are actually pretty inefficient drums in the rear :ROFLMAO:

Re: Driving on the Autobahn. I owned a Datsun (the name before Nissan for you young guys) 240Z for about 20 years and I had installed a 5 speed from a 280Z in it for better highway cruising. During a 3 year tour to Germany in the '80's I had many occasions to drive it at 100 mph or better for many miles on the Autobahn and after each run, the car had a very noticeable improvement in around town, 0 to 60 power - It felt like the car had an extra 25 hp it ran so well. It obviously loved those high speed runs. In all the years I owned that car, both before and after Germany, I never noticed that change. Evidently, sustained high speeds just 'cleaned it out' and it ran more efficiently for the next couple hundred around town miles

Oh, yeah - While I was over there, I had the opportunity to drive 3 laps around the infamous North Course of the Nurburgring as fast as I dared. There were times where I thought I was really smokin' it . . . . and then some young guy on a motorcycle with his girlfriend hanging on for dear life would blow by me like I was standing still!! They had certain days back then where you could pay a few marks and drive your personal vehicle for a few laps . . . . after you signed your life away :eek:

Out of Spec motors have tested the ID.3 on the Autobahn and Nubergring in Germany and that vehicle is very much capable of top speed driving. While not the ID.4 the ID.3 is based on the same MEB platform and can be expected to perform similar to the ID.4.

No issues going at max speed 99 MPH all day long.....just big hit on efficiency....inverter is at peak efficiency and motor is in sweet spot on the efficiency table and rotor 16000 RPM speed.
The inverter might be fine with 100% throttle (and brushless motors can handle non-stop load like this without problems) the battery shown by Ross-Tech's stats shows the ID.4 is battery limited. Accelerating gradually to 100mph might be fine but hammering the accelerator to 100mph is probably not good for this car's li-ion pack.

I have my doubt the motor was spinning at 16000 RPM at the speed of 99 mph. There's a software RPM or Speed limiter to prevent the motor from burning.

Based on the rear 20" wheels+tire combo of 255/45-20, my hand calcs showed that at

S= 99 mph, RPMm = 14891
S= 100 mph, RPMm = 15042

And at designed max. RPM of 16000
RPMm = 16000, S= 106 mph

That's why the ID.4 top speed is limited to 100 mph (161 km/h) to preserve the motor.

At t=11:58 Kyle of the Out of Spec Motoring blasted the ID.3 on the Autobahn. The top speed is clearly shown limited to 166 km/h.
