Homelink Mirror Alternative
If you have been considering having a Homelink mirror installed here is an alternative that I have been using. It is a myQ Chamberlain Smart Garage Door Opener. The app for it is installed on your Apple/Android phone and works anywhere in the world. When you drive up to your garage simply touch the app on your vehicle screen and open your garage door. The app shows you if your garage door is open or closed.

I have a garage door opener with this built in. I didn't reinstall the app when we moved to our new house. Are you saying this is compatible with CarPlay? Because if so, that's fantastic! Also, you can set it up with geofencing so you don't even need to touch the app if you prefer.
I don’t have my ID.4 yet, but I’m strongly inclined to find a way to mount my garage door clicker on the front side of the overhead panel that holds the lights. Presto!

it’s a shame that whoever Homelink is has the market tied up. There’s not $300 in value there, but there is zero competition. I’ll bet there is some patent stuff involved.

I looked into what it would take for the myQ product to be viable on my genie garage door opener about 6 months ago with an iPhone or rather CarPlay . You end up needing a Bridge from them for another $100. It looks like the pricing was recently restructured, though, 6 months ago it was over $200 for the 2 products. This is better now. I ended up using a product called Tailwind www.gotailwind.com that ended up being a little lower in price, but uses proximity based signaling to open the door automatically when the car approaches. Usually it does it flawlessly, but some times you end up using the app Itself. I plan on getting the home link for failover and I have a opener at work that can be learned as well.
All that restructuring was due to HomeKit compatibility, which they promised us Chamberlin/Liftmaster early adopters would be a "simple" upgrade. Instead, they issued a quiet press release offering a free hub upgrade that many of us missed. I called in and was able to get a sympathetic ear from a customer service rep who sent out a new kit to me for free, but now when I look there are half a dozen different hubs, adapters, and devices themselves so it's frustrating. I don't know if my 2nd gen stuff will work with the latest gear. That's the main reason I haven't bothered setting anything up after our latest move! But now I'm curious if it works with CarPlay that would incentivize me to play with it again.

I have an extra internet gateway and wall control panel that should work for android users. Mine was replaced because it's not compatible with Apple's HomeKit.

I have myQ and it works fairly well, there is a product by Meeros which I feel is better. If there is a way to connect myQ to the CarPlay App I sure would like to know how, I have not figured that out.

I’m confused. You are not the first person I’ve seen talk up the auto dimming. Auto dimming rear view mirror is standard, and the gps will provide compass direction, so a $300 add-on isn’t needed unless you need more than one garage/gate/drawbridge controllerGentex. I don't have an opinion either way--I'm not necessarily talking up the auto dimming feature, just pointing out that's what their claim to fame is/was. The technology that is being paid for is that and now they have the rolling code garage openers as another feature. Those openers aren't their patents (well, technically, neither are the auto dimming materials but they at least bought that company and I suspect license the garage opening tech).
