Homelink Mirror

Just had the homelink mirrow installed by my dealer. Has auto dimming, direction your heading is in the right corner area and 3 buttons you can program. Picture doesn't really show the buttons on the bottom. Price was $275 and dealer installed for no charge. Glad to have back the convenience I had in my previous Passat.

Good idea. I would like to get one when my AWD’s arrive. Do you have any part details that you ca share?
In your photo the Homelink-equipped mirror also looks bigger (wider) than the stock. True?

If you are handy the mirror can be purchased on the internet for about $220. It is a simple install. There is a YouTube showing how.
But if you can get your dealer to install for $275 that is not a bad deal.

I spy a Trek mountain bike. Which model do you own?

Somewhat of a bike nerd.

BTW thanks for posting. Would look into that later this year when my AWD arrives.

You've got eagle eyes. It's a Trek Remedy 9.7.
I installed my Homelink mirror and rear seat protector yesterday - guess which one took longer?

The mirror is a simple (no tools) < 5 min install. The seat protector took 2-3 times as long.

While the Homelink mirror has the same outside dimensions as the original, because it is frameless there is a noticeable increase in the viewing area, allowing the driver to see some faces of little ones in the back seat. With that increase, the compass, and the Homelink buttons it is a definite win in my book.

The seat protector from VW fits much better than the one I received last week from WeatherTech (which I returned) and has all the correct openings for seatbelts.

End of week 2 - 2 wins!

I could not find a video on the Homelink Installation. Are the connections already there so this is just a matter of connecting it together? Did you have to remove the old mirror from the glass or just take the frame apart and replace from there?
Here is the previous information: (14) The ID.4 stories | Page 2 | Volkswagen ID Forum (vwidtalk.com)

All connectors/wiring are in place - pull apart old connector, replace with new connector as part of Homelink mirror.
Nothing is removed/reattached to the glass.

All can easily be done with fingers:
1) remove lower cover
2) remove upper cover
3) rotate old mirror about 45 degrees to release connector
4) disconnect wiring by pulling apart connector
5) set aside old mirror
6) connect wiring connector to Homelink mirror
7) install Homelink mirror by rotating into place
8) replace upper cover
9) replace lower cover

Follow instructions for compass and Homelink setup (this comes with the Homelink mirror)

(It took me more time to type this than to do it 😉)

Thanks @Swimrwo and @bottyguy for your mirror installation instructions. Mine arrived today and I was able to do a no-tool installation in a few minutes thanks to your help.

Does the Homelink mirror only work when the car is powered on? Downside of a cheapo remote is that somone could break into the car and open the garage door with just the remote.

Yes, only when car is on.

Brilliant! Just ordered one from Ontario VW. $209 + $10 shipping + tax. The frameless design will be a nice upgrade to the interior.

It really does look nice.

Damn you guys for posting pics. I have no need for Homelink but that frameless design is beautiful and one of the details my wife identified on her outgoing S60 that made it feel "special" to her. I think I have to look for one "just because." But $200 seems to have a bit of extra markup compared to VW's other replacement mirrors.

The price difference for the Homelink mirrors has to do with licensing fees to Homelink/Gentex (which are not cheap). I think that is why companies are stopping including Homelink as standard equipment (Tesla no longer includes Homelink either).

Well shoot them is there a P/N for a non-Homelink version of a frameless mirror? Are all VW mirror ball mounts same diameter?
