I've been thinking about doing this myself - its too tinny sounding. As for location, if I were to guess, it's right behind the bumper on the driver side.

From the service manual. But you might be able to get to it from the underside if you remove the lower covers

That's great - thank you !
I bought a new horn, cannot get the bumper off!!
With my luck, If I did this. I'd get an error message: Horn cannot be found. & my car would BRICK.

I want to take this horn, fly to Germany, and throw it at whoever decided this is okay. Seriously. It's probably one of the things I actually hate about this car.

Would be interesting to know what horn people replace it with.

I asked Volkswagen Germany and you can choose a new horn.

Something that isn’t controlled by a computer. I want to be able to quickly honk the horn at some idiot looking at their phone, not blast at them rudely for a half second.

100% agree…the horn totally blows (sorry for the good pun) if you do figure something out, please let me know. Would like that two tone European horn, or something better…basically anything would be better than what they went with…it’s completely obnoxious 😬

Rocket oil,
Since you have access to the service manual, would you please post the instructions for the removal of the front bumper cover.
Thanks

I'm baffled, how would you get an error msg by replacing the

Item 4 - OE 12V horn
White Product Automotive lighting Font Automotive mirror

with a set of the OEM 12V horn?
Font Gas Drinkware Toy Magenta

Or

Right here

Or here

Sound tests each horn and see which one sounds the best to your ears.

If the module is expecting to see a specific resistance value and does not, it could assume the horn is faulty and give an error. That is the same way the bulb out warnings work in the past. The burnt out bulb has a value of “OL” and the computer says “bad bulb”. Older BMWs were notorious for giving this error for a different bulb replacement. The replacement bulb had a resistance value slightly different and the computer assumed “bad bulb”.

That's right, but it won't give an error message if you replace an OE 12V horn with an OEM 12V horn with the same R - Ω value.

In theory, but if you double the horns, or change their sound, it is unlikely they will be the same. That is also assuming that is how it is error checking. I don’t know how it actually does it. The could be a circuit board with some coding of its own in the horn.
I just had mine repalced at the dealer. I wouldn't attempt it because it also involves some camera alignment issues on reinstallation.

Had them replaced with what? Original horn? one or two or something else? I would like to remove the original one and replace it with two others. Has anyone done this?

It should not require any of that. The front bumper has nothing to do with the cameras up in the windshield. I've had the bumper off - it's not rocket science. The main radar stays affixed to the vehicle.
